RickenFakers
It was probably a Shaftesbury or maybe a Cimar, sorry, don't know who made these yet. My Fireglo Frankenbugger would have originally been the same as this - it's very good.

The truss on these adjusts with a nut rather than the usual allen key - my guess would be that some gimp chewed the wood out of this so they could get an adjustable spanner on the nut, rather than get the correct tool or a suitable size socket.

I suppose that's sometimes the problem with 70s stuff. Over the course of 30 plus years they must find their way into the hands of a fair few idiots.

Happens a lot. These things - and JapCrap in general - were regarded as cheap rubbish for years, they still are by many people. On the whole they won't have been treated with a lot of respect for the last 35 years, many of them have just been trashed & ended up chucked in a skip. That's the main reason why they're pretty rare these days.
It's very probably MIJ, and might be a Kasuga - but if so, not an exact model I've seen before.

Will you be up for whipping off the scratchplate & taking a few pics of pups/'tronics/body routing?

Lovely bass & a great score there. :)

J.
For sure! Shall I post pics here? Last tracked earlier today, heading from Sofiya to London.

I'm really keen to see what she sounds like!

It's here & I'm spending an evening getting acquainted. New set of string required. Lucky I have some roto swings here. Trc sez 'electric bass' in a familiar script. The 'stereo sound' seems to be working, which is cool. Tuners maybe are the week point but it looks the part & sounds pretty cool. Tho I cant really crank it too loud! It is pretty much as per pics in the link from the original ad, if you followed that link.

When I change strings I'll take the plate off & grab some snaps..

Looks exactly the same as my old bass (below) except the bridge pickup. I certainly didn't get £1400 for mine haha!

And who are Joy Division?
seems to be quite a few new brand fakers hitting the market in the east now. Saw these the other day. The bridge just looks bizarre.

These really are the bum-end of vile Chinese tat, never seen one for real but one turned up on Ebay a year or so ago - the chancer was trying to fob it off as an Ibanez, presumably because of the pickups.
Quick question for yous experts. In one of the local flea pits and found one of these

Looks pretty similar except it had a black TRC with the name in gold and I think the knobs were a different.

A bit battered around the edges and needs a good clean, dust in all the hard to get places the TRC looked cracked but all there and I think there was a crack on the scratchplate too.

How much you do these things usually go for?
Sold mine for £165 last year, but have seen them go to pushing £250.
Couldn't get away with the short scale, or the very limited tonal variation. Also seemed fragile with poor action beyond redemption by me.
Stupidly light though, and some may consider very cool :) .
Good luck,
Karl.

edited for spelling yet again.

These are sort of interesting - seems they were made in both Italy & Japan, no idea about the Jap ones but the Italians are Eko. If it's cheap, definitely get it for mucking around on, tidying up & flogging. These presumably are the earliest Rickenfakers, seem to be mid-60s onwards.

Found this on RickResource, of all places:

Not a Greco or even Japanese. That's an Italian-made Gherson. Very interesting & much rarer than any JapCrap.

Wonder why he's pretending it's a Greco? First random JapCrap name he could think of? Too bad they were never sold in the UK, then. :)

Please can you lot talk me out of buying this, getting it delivered to my Canadian resident girlfriend and trying to sneak it through customs? I mean it's just the nicest thing I've ever seen.

That's a through-neck Kasuga. Some of the bolt-neck ones were quite attractive:

Jesus Christ, that is amazing. Where the hell did you find it if you don't mind me asking?

While not quite as popular I'd actually prefer a more adjustable bolt on neck personally.

This was a ridiculous stroke of luck - turned up on Ebay about 6 or 7 years ago, the seller was so desperate to avoid his listing getting pulled that he managed to hide it from everyone - apart from me. It actually ran a full 10 days & ended with no bids, he relisted it unchanged, same thing happened & I nabbed it for the £200 start price. If only he'd started it at £50! :)

Anyway it has been pimped a trifle - original hardware & scratchplate were the same as the neckthrough you posted, I fitted the pearl plate, handmade mirrored surround & trc (obviously not pictured) and the Hipshot. This was my first Faker - the original Rickenbugger - and probably one of the few basses I'd have a really hard time parting with, so if you want it, you'll have to kill me & steal it. And if you do it'll punish you by crushing your spine if you try & play it standing up. Not sure what it's punishing me for, though...
£200 is unbelievable for that! Awesome.

Is this a Real Rick? Some debate on talkbass but I'd say it is a modded genuine rick rather than a fakey.

That's interesting, real or not. It's no specific copy I know of but there are a lot of things about it that make me think it's a Faker. I'd say it's a custom copy that's stuck very closely to original design & styling but has a few differences due to hardware choices. Will have to pop over to RR to see what they're saying about it. Apart from "burn it".
