outboard preamp to give GB bass type sound?

I like my passive jazz bass, but I also like that great active sound that you get from GB basses, and Status as well. Is there an outboard preamp that would get you into that ballpark?

I'm just a bedroom player so I don't have a clue about this sort of stuff.
