wateroftyne Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 Another great gone... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z91l_lPz1oc Quote
Coilte Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 I'm really sad to learn about this. His death follows not too long after Joe Sample's. An amazing sax player and a real funky bassist. R.I.P. Wilton. Quote
lowdown Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 (edited) Very sad. Loved his opening Tenor line intro on Street Life, and of course, the knockout solo. Edited September 28, 2015 by lowdown Quote
Mykesbass Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 Just dug out Streetlife album on vinyl and now listening. Very sad news. Quote
leschirons Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 Sad, but on the upside, not many get to have a 60 year career doing what you love. RIP. Quote
spectoremg Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 Very sad. Love Street Life and his work with Joni. Quote
yorks5stringer Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 Sad loss and unusually a Master of Sax and Bass. Quote
chris_b Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 This is terrible news. He was one of the best bass players the planet has ever known. Quote
Subbeh Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Oh man that is a shame, such a great player Quote
project_c Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 Very sad to hear about this, one of my favourite bassists. The 2nd Crusade LP has some great examples of his playing. He plays a p with flats and the lines are confident, melodic and funky. I learnt every song on that album, probably the reason why I've ended up playing a precision. R.I.P Quote
mxm Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Only just heard about his passing - sad news. Quote
Beer of the Bass Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 He was great outside of the funky thing too, just a supremely musical guy all around, and I really like his sound and approach on this. bubinga5 Posted October 1, 2015 Posted October 1, 2015 Really so sorry to see this master has gone. really loved his playing. This is him and Bobby Womack. He played bass on this record also i believe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EZVykSFs08 Quote
4 Strings Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I maintain I Want You Back by the Jackson Five has one of the best baselines in any song. How much of it he created I don't know but it is superbly played and, not being a fan of the use of picks, this is one of my very favourite performances. A sad loss. Quote

In the end someone emailed one of Wilton's close associates, and the answer came back that he never used a pick. I guess he could have got a similar sound with a little fingernail contact, or very hard calluses. Quote

deepbass5 Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Just ditto - above , loved his feel, a player that stuck in my head because he made you seek him out to find out who that was playing on a particular track. Quote
sammybee Posted October 3, 2015 Posted October 3, 2015 Inherit the Wind was the soundtrack for my summer when I was 12. A great loss. Didn't realise he was a bass player too. Quote
