Norris
My mate at work has loaned me his active 6 string Sandberg fretless and it's a lovely bass. Nice clean sounds and a gorgeous "mwah" to it

Kiwi
Wals are lovely but have you tried these yet? Pedulla Pentabuzz (loads of sustain with lots of bright mwah) Ashbory bass (Rubbery sound a little like an upright and very even response) Godin Acoustibass (light weight and very resonant) NS Wav upright (long scale add huge depth and bloom to the notes) All of them are standard setting fretless instruments in their own way. Ashbury - yeah tried one, couldn't do the short scale thing, felt weird but sounded ok Godin - not tried one of these either... NS NXT - got one and love it, use it for emulating upright sounds, gets close enough for live use My try list is now Wal fetless 4 and Pedulla Pentabuzz 4...and a Godin if I can find one

drTStingray
I think string choice makes a vast difference on any bass but especially fretless. I have a 3 band fretless Stingray and have put Ernie Ball Cobalt flatwounds on it recently. The sound and string attack is quite different but it produces tons of mwah (though always has). The mid range control brings out the upper register well in a band situation. This demonstrates a Stingray fretless recorded well (it ain't me - it's far better lol!!) http://youtu.be/VMVAwUYCn3A Edited September 29, 2015 by drTStingray
ezbass
Any of the Rob Allens are worth a try, my MB2 can have that deep upright like tone or, with a boost in the 500k range, a more 'typical' fretless tone.

TrevorR
It may be worth experimenting with some outboard if you are struggling to get a great core sound... it may be that your brain is hankering for something more processed. I know that there will be people going on about "pure tone" but at the end of the day, the resulting sound is the result of the component parts...
That's quite true but to balance that, GIGO equally applies with a sound source...
Oooooooh, look at ther carve on that? I look at that bass and just keep wondering if Roger Giffen was involved in the design somewhere along the lines. Takes me right back to the stuff he was doing in the late 80s...
