Its all really "attacky", which has its place, but not for me. I'm much more a fan of the smooth rounded sound, like this: (John Mayer Trio - Vultures - Pino Pallidino) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNHJBnQTzog or this: (Alicia Keys - If I Ain't got you- Fred Cash Jr.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju8Hr50Ckwk This is one of my examples of a good attacking sound to me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoltwBHXCx8

Naetharu
Right now the tone I'm in love with is that used by Avenged Sevenfold's Johnny Christ. I believe it's an MXR-M80 running into a GK 2001RB head and it just sounds fantastic. Wonderful example in their classic 'Bat Country' for anyone not familiar with the band. The book Blowin' Free lists the Ric as being used at the time of Pilgrimage. The Ric was replaced after it was damaged (neck break) by the T Bird (he borrowed Pete Watts' and liked it). I'd love to have my gear knowledge improved. What's the skinny on the P?

As you were, I know nothing about Wishbone Ash.
Ah, good to know. Right then, Rickenbacker it is. On the subject of the other guy, I've always though Bob Babbitt is underrated, always in the shadow of Jameson. But I think his repeating grooves and riffs are far more relevant to what most of us actually play today, unlike Jameson's (genius that he was) jazz inspired, melodic, sub-harmonies. To be clear - Jameson = bass god, Babbitt = also great, but underrated by comparison. One of the great bass tones for me Entwistle's playing on The Real Me. I've heard it isolated and it (to my ears) it doesn't sound the best, but in the whole recording context, a tone to die for. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2h1MY70uag
Paul S
I heard this for the first time last week and the tone of the bass hit me straight away. Nice, stripped bare kind of toon, if you like that kind of thing, and (IMHO) a refreshing change from the big production numbers you usually hear in modern country music. http://youtu.be/4zAThXFOy2c

Pow_22
Im loving the early Fratellis bass tone at the moment. Its got a nice growly sound to it. I know he uses a flats loaded P bass through an SVT - its got a lovely pillowy thumup initially that has a kind of valvey breakup sustain. Songs like Look Out Sunshine and Mistress Mabel show it really well

NancyJohnson
I'm slowly falling in love with Daniel Spriewalds tone; phat and slightly overdriven. He plays for The Drills - if you're familiar with the Phil X Fretted Americana videos, you'll know that Daniel is the bassist in he Drills...they generally cover something at the end of each promo. In this case, it's Superstition. Song starts at 11:45. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW13vfMrsxk
