Secondhand Squier VMJ (or maybe a £40 Harley Benton Deko Jazz, if one came up), a loud amp that works, and a lead to connect the two. Oh, and a strap.

I'd add a headstock clip tuner but that's about it for need. But what's the fun in need?

Tell me (and my 700-odd rubbish basses) about it!

A vintage or Squier bass and an Ashdown EB 150 combo, would leave you change for 10 pints and a curry. Perfectly useable gear for an average pub gig.

Peavey T-Max 500 - £160
Peavey 410 - £40
Aria 5 string - £150

That's what I paid for those. Though I have had the amp for over fifteen years and the bass for not much shy of that. I have seen the same bass, more recently, in better condition for just £115. I don't have enough money to be too proud to play cheap stuff...

I do have better, more expensive basses (though not a lot more expensive). If I was to come into money I would probably stick with the same amp anyway. I love it.
