lukeward2004 Posted September 6, 2008 Share Posted September 6, 2008 Hi guys, I thought I would start a thread about folks bass history, the basses you have been through since day one, and what you have now - its a bit of a gear porn fest, but hey! Ill get the ball rolling: Sadly, my first bass is no longer with me, it was a Westfield Precision bass, black with white plate, and it fell apart after 3 months, no pictures unfortunately! Next up: MIM Fender Jazz Bass, with Badass II Bridge. Precision GAS struck and then I had this made: Precision bass handbuilt by Bravewood Guitars - loaded with SD 1/4 £er and finished in Nitro Cellulose. I traded this in for a Warwick, which I will get to shortly. Fantastic bass, should never have let it go!!! I decided to take a little foray into 5 string playing, and bought my first 5er, a Yamaha BBG5a, seen below: Which was replaced after a year or so with a Warwick Streamer Standard, shown here being gigged hard a few years ago: But then sold on as I couldnt find the tone I wanted, great bass, fat as you like and a really nice hifi growl, but just not "me". Eventually got replaced with: My Warwick Streamer LX5, which is still with me today and I will probably keep indefinately - it has such a lovely warmth and growl I dont think I can face selling it! Next up is a 70's Style Jazz Bass, which I believe is for sale on these very boards: Cracking bass, white blocks and binding, Badass II Bridge modified for strings thru body, and played like a dream - sold to fund my Vigier, which is coming up. "bitsa" jazz bass, really nice little player, but I sold it on after a week after realising I had far too many basses and not nearly enough talent to justify it! Traded the Custom Precision for a Warwick Streamer Stage One 4 string, completely different animal to the 5 string flavour, and a really nice bass - now with Ben White on the boards: Traded this in with Ben for a mint 2000 Musicman Stingray 3eq, I was GASsing for that classic Ray sound! Here she is: After a big clearout of gear, I aquired this from our very own Ped, and its still with me and going nowhere for the foreseeable future: My Current main bass, Vigier Passion III 5 string custom - quite simply the best bass I have ever played. Yeah I have been very lucky to have had these basses, but it took hours upon hours of hard work and saving to be able to afford them! Its only really recently that I have had the pleasure of owning a few top end basses, like the Bacchus and the Vigier, and m Warwick - I could never afford to lay out £1000 + for a bass nowadays! Many other basses in between, but sold to TheMoo in 2006 after... ... My KingBass Artist 5 arrived! (Sold in 2007 to Ian.) My trusty Warwick Triumph EUB. Awesome sound & I play this regularly on jazz jobs. Love it! Midnight Wine MIM Jazz 5 (sold in 2007 to a pupil who is still very happy with it!) Status Groove which I bought from Dub Junkie on these pages. (Later traded in against my Corvette $$) Squier VMJ (also traded in against Warwick $$) Warwick Corvette $$ - Possibly the best all-round bass I've ever played. (Sold to a pupil to raise funds towards my 1990 Status S2.) Jackson CMG Concert Bass. Bought in cheap as a curiosity and traded in against... Ibanez SRX705. Sold on ebay after being gigged once. Bought on here from Beneath it all for a song. An awesome bass & I still have it now. One of my regular players. Status S2-Classic. This is my current main bass. Stunning in every respect and a sound to die for! Status Energy Artist 5 with graphite neck. I had this for about 5 days before someone on Statii.com persuaded me to sell it! It was really nice as well. One of the last S1 Jazzes in Candy Cola. The best jazz I've ever played. Stunning sound! (Sold to help fund my 1990 Status S2.) My new KingBass. My pride and joy, this one! The bass I traded the really nice Jazz & Corvette for. The most beautiful Status ever! Marcus Miller Jazz. Now traded for Status S2 5-string. 2008 American Standard Precision. A stunning bass, but not for me. Also traded against the S2 5-string. 2008 Status S2-Classic bolt on 5. The Bacchus would have to be exceptional to outdo it and though your Vigier looks amazing, personally I can't get on with graphite.. Lovely colection you have at the moment though.. lukeward2004 Posted September 7, 2008 Author Share Posted September 7, 2008 Nick - I hadn't so much as looked at my Warwick for about 5 months since I got my Vigier, and I thought "sod it, ill take the warwick to the studio this week" and I left the Vigier at home. I had forgotten just how much I love this bass, the way it plays, the thick, growly tones that come out of it, and the way it looks! My Band had a bit of a lineup change just after I got the Vigier, so two of the guys and our singer have never heard the sweet sounds of my Warwick, and they told me to leave the Vigier at home from now on!! Doctor J - The Bacchus is awesome, thank you for being such a trustworthy bloke and making the trade a smooth one, beers all round next time we meet methinks. THe Bacchus is an awesome bass, it has the Jazz tones I was looking for, and I think I am in the very lucky position of being able to choose between 3 top end basses that can cover pretty much any situation I find myself in musically. How's it sound ?[/quote] It sounds superb mate - its got all the growl and warmth a Jazz bass should have, although it is a more modern siunding jazz as opposed to a vintage jazz tone. A little bit of a tweak on the EQ and ading a bit of tube warmth brings it to life I think, I can get close to a Marcus Miller tone with it, and it sounds great slapped or with fingers. Im surprised actually, this is the best Jazz type bass I have ever owned! So you dont have your Ray anymore then? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Rayman Posted September 7, 2008 Share Posted September 7, 2008 MIM P bass, in the hands of my oldest (who looks very young here) best all round precision I've ever played bar none; 70s/80s Yamaha BBs, L-R, Fretless 400S, stunning 3000S in the middle, and an 1100S; Epi Thunderbird, Fender Marcus Miller, 70s Ibanez P. Three truely great basses; Fender deluxe P; One I should NEVER have sold, Lakland JO4. LOVED it, but needed to raise some cash; Beautiful Stingray, just not right for me; Lovely Ibanez K5, great player; Schecter Model T; ............and the final two for now, Fender Highway One Jazz with Villex pups, BIG tone, old faithful, and my gorgeous Lakland DJ4, stunning in every way, thanks Mike, along side my Trace rig; This was the edited version. Honourable mentions to the Geddy Jazz, great bass but no pics of it, and the OLP Tony Levin I still have for mucking around at home on, again, no pics of it. I know, it looked like cr*p, but was quite playable and had a nice tone. Despite the bent neck and strange cracking in the pots. And losing it's tune. But still, had a lot of spirit to it. Currently, lies disassembled and awaits for the better future. My [b]Traben Neo[/b]. Currently strung with flatwounds, she really does the trick. Not many of them in Poland, too. Versatile and nice bass, especially after I removed the lacquer from the neck pocket - it added LOTS of sustain to this already sustain-ish ( ) axe. As she's my first REAL bass, I'd never let go of her. But I'm planning to lend her to my friend as she wants to learn to play a bass. Now, that's my 'Immo Custom Shop' project number 1. Feast thee eyes upon [b]ICS EB-3 TeleJäg[/b]. Looks weird, doesn't she? She's a really great bass. Custom electronics, tremendous amount of punch and... bent neck. When I'll get raise, I'll order custom neck (32"), exact copy of the old one (with a bit tweaked headstock, maybe) and fix the electronics (pots, wires and switches) and finish her finally (I started to work in a company with constant crunch-time and never had the time to do so earlier). Another prototype. Single-Cut, Single-Coil - I give you [b]ICS SC[i][b][color=#104E8B][sup]2[/sup][/color][/b][/i] TeleBass[/b]. Surf rock style, baby! As with the TeleJäg, she'll be finished when the time will allow me to do so. As for now, she's nice 'semi-acoustic' bass with lots of vintage feel. Familiar grounds, at last! Here's my [b]Ibanez ATK-310[/b]. Great bass, but I'm not entirely feeling it. Have you noticed? I said "it", and I referred to the previous ones as "she". Lacks something, I don't know... Spirit, maybe? It's too modern for me, I prefer vintage basses as for now. So, it's for sale (actually, almost sold). Here's my all-time favorite: 93' MiJ [b]Fender [/b][b]Custom [/b][b]Precision Bass[/b], my cream of the crop. She's seen a LOT of action and has been customized with APB-2 Lightnin' Rod pickup, chrome covers, thumbrest and nylon tapewounds and the scratchplate was painted black. The most unique sounding P-bass I've ever played/heard. And she's mine, mine, MINE! Akhem. Aother one is 83' [b]Peavey T-40[/b], a monster among basses. Tonnes of sustain, tonnes of sound. [i]Pure mayhem[/i], [i]carnage[/i], [i]havoc[/i] and other nasty words come to mind when you hear her. She also has many sublime things to her, however. Great purchase. Last, but not least, my newest acquisition: Custom [b]Fender/Squier[/b] mash-up [b]70's Telecaster Bass[/b] that I'm going to customise as my 'Fake Fender Signature'. it's already great, punchy and very low-endish. Feels like a Fender should. Now I'm going to find a nice electric guitar, most likely Fender-like (Telecaster, Jaguar or Duo Sonic). And that will be it for the coming years, I hope.
