Not a bass that suites my personal taste but that wood grain is beautiful. The grain just follows the body shape in a way that I have never seen before - nothing ugly about that one in my opinion. This one on the right however, reminds me of a little shovel you might see a dwarf from one of Tolkein's stories using to bury treasure. Saying that...I kind of like it. Too easily impressed with all the nobs and buttons I think - probably should have been a keyboard player Edited October 13, 2015 by Naetharu Quote

Roland Rock Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 Not a monstrosity, but too squat and rotund for my taste. If you wore that on a strap, it would hang in such a way that the headstock was out of reach! Quote

Number6 Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 (edited) From memory this is a Starfire modified for Phil Lesh by Alembic..... But it is imho iconic to Lesh and the GD. Edited October 14, 2015 by Number6 Quote

White Cloud Posted October 14, 2015 Posted October 14, 2015 The Alembic on the right is likely to be well known to Alembic club members. It was commissioned as a custom build for a certain person, I seem to recall it was named "Tomahawk" or something similar. The guy that had it commissioned caused a bit of outrage on the club at the time...I personally seem to recall his online persona as coming across as vile and divisive. Ugly bass btw. Quote

Bilbo Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 If you trawl through the Alembic Custom archives, you will see an astonishing number of fugly basses. I haven't looked for ages but recall only one or two that I would consider buying if money was no object. I have to say that I rarely like the sound of them either (Jimmy Johnson is the exception that proves the rule). Have played three and didn't like any of them. CamdenRob Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 (edited) I've always liked the look of this... Although I'd never buy one as I couldn't get past the gold hardware, short scale and the fact that it's someones signature bass... they look damn cool though. TheGreek Posted October 15, 2015 Author Posted October 15, 2015 Yes, Alembic have built some beauties...unfortunately the one in the link IMO doesn't fit in that category...love the SC models Quote

jacko Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 White cloud - "The guy that had it commissioned caused a bit of outrage on the club at the time...I personally seem to recall his online persona as coming across as vile and divisive." Indeed he was . Whenever anyone disagreed with him he'd call that person a racist. Eventually Mica Wickersham asked him to leave. I have a note of one of her comments to him ... " I would venture in saying, Hal, that a pattern of controversy seems to largely track threads you participate in. Some sage advice my mother gave to me long ago was, "if you think it's everyone else, consider that maybe it isn't." He was last seen trying to sell the tomahawk to fund his business making his own version - the funkbass. Not much on the alembic forum rocks the boat but Hal caused quite a bit of controversy and led to a couple of long standing members quiting. Quote
