njr911
I have a 2009 Fender Road Worn Jazz which I totally love. It feels great, really nicely worn in and resonates when playing. it always sounds good live too. We did some studio work this week and I took it down. when DI'd it sounded awful. Quite thin and toppy even with old flat wounds and the tone rolled off. Even soloed on the neck pickup. Swapped to my USA P and it sounded much deeper and fuller. I can only put this down to the mex pickups in the RW Jazz now being the same quality as pickups in a 2001 USA P. Does this sound correct ? I might have to keep the Jazz as a live only bass. paul_5
Were you miking the cab at the same time? If so then you might have had a phasing issue between the two signals, which would account for the anaemic tone. I tend to use a 'low end enhancer' plugin with studio work (Waves RBass), which I never need live. Horses for courses.
Sibob
Why would you put the sound difference down to one being MIM & one being MIA? You're comparing a Precision to a Jazz, the P will always be deeper and fuller! Plus, yes, DI will always sound thinner compared to a mic'd cab, never record just with a DI.......unless you have a really nice tube DI. But still, I'd want some cab to mix in! Lozz196
Or failing being able to mic a cab up, do a split DI, one with your eq`d sound and one flat from the bass, then merge them. Really adds some bulk to the sound, adding in the flat bass one.

njr911
Yes the cab wasn't mic'ed and it was a cheep DI box so that may explain it.
cameltoe
I emailed fender when I bought my Roadworn Precision who informed me they use USA pickups in the Roadworn series.
