The best ever rhythm section thread...

Jon Hiseman and Tony Reeves. Apart from their amazing work with "Colosseum", IMO they are the best rhythm section that blues man John Mayall ever had. Here they are on Mayall's "Bare Wires" album on the track "Look In The Mirror". On the section after the brief bass solo, I often switch the channel on my hi f to isolate bass and drums, just to listen to and admire their great contribution.

+1

So many great grooves from these guys down the years it's almost impossible to choose a favourite.

How about Vinnie Colaiuta and Arthur Barrow?

Best? Too subjective, but I'll lob in Francis Rocco Prestia and David Garibaldi (Tower of Power).

Yes, of course, too subjective... but even tho I think I should... I can't get Rocco..
too mechanical and cold.. oh well..!!

Czukay/Leibezeit - just to get the totally obscure out of the way.
Don't do drugs, kids!

I enjoyed hearing that again. I think I prefer Damo era Can to the earlier Malcolm Mooney, but can never be quite sure. Holgar Czukay's solo albums are well worth a listen,as I'm sure you know.

Yes they are! I like Damo too, but I also have a lot of time for Monster Movie, so there it is. Apparently YouTube won't allow any Mooney-era CAN for some reason, so here's some rare live footage from 1973 you may not have seen to be going on with. ;)

I'm going to go against the convention that a rhythm section is just bass and drums. It can be greater when it's bass, drums and rhythm guitar.

So I'd go for Duff McKagan, Steve Adler and Izzy Stradlin' - aka the three original Guns n Roses members the general public can't name. Those three had the groove!

Another vote for JPJ & Bonham but amongst those I've seen Roscoe Beck / Tom Brechtlein (Robben Ford) and Muzz Skillings / Will Calhoun (Living Colour) comes to mind.
Good call on Beck/Brechtlein, puts me in mind of Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton.
