mingsta
While there are plenty of entertaining posts from people in bands with various personnel/politics/money disagreements, I was wondering is anyone in a band with NO issues and if so, what do you think are the reasons that it just works for you guys? lojo
I have a slow burner band where there are absolutely no issues, I have no idea why, but the dynamic is amazing. Our gigs are few a far between, but they are the highlight of each year musically. I have also been in a band recently with so many issues I could re make Bad news and Spinal Tap with new material based on it.
Graham
My main covers band is great, first band I've been in where we all genuinely like each other and get on. It might help that we don't have a permanent drummer, rather a choice of deps depending on who's free, so that reduces the likelihood of arguments by 25%! Twigman
No problems in my band. Been together on and off for over 30 years. We don't play many gigs. We have a great laugh when we're away together. One of our number works with a very big act for his day job and reckons coming away with us is infinitely more fun. CamdenRob
No issues in either of my bands Whenever I join a new project there is always the initial period where the other members find out that I will not be told what to play. I am the bass player and I will write my own basslines, they can either accept that or get someone else... The bands that I end up staying in always work harmoniously as everyone knows where they stand I wouldn't bother playing in any project that didn't suit me musically or contained anyone with half the attitude some on BC describe their bandmates as having... Then again I am not playing bass for my living... If I was I'd put up and shut up and get on with whatever gave me the most money regardless of the other guys in the band. Lozz196
Yep, no issues in my band. We`re a 3-piece which cuts down opinions anyway, but in general (all the time in fact) the singer/guitarist sorts everything and the drummer and I agree with it. We have a good laugh but we put the hours in, gig very regularly, make sure we`re always on time for soundchecks, stay to watch the other bands after we`ve played etc. I think age comes into it - we`re all late 40s/early 50s, we`ve had the attitude in our younger years and realised it`s all so much better when that`s dropped, plus as we all drive to gigs we don`t drink much (at all in my case) so there aren`t the follow-ons from someone being drunk and stupid. I also think a willingness to try out the others ideas on your own instrument helps - if someone suggests "try this on bass" I will. Just cos I didn`t think of it doesn`t make it any lesser and it may well improve the song - often does in fact. We have that ethic throughout, all happy to try someone elses ideas. Guest Jecklin
Never a personality clash, but problems rehearsing regularly enough led to me rewriting my material so I could go solo at the end of last year. Best choice I could have made. Admittedly this is not an option for most on basschat.
Nicko
Surprisingly we had a drummer leave some time ago because he thought the guitarist was going to be an issue, and since then I don't think there are any issues with the band. We brought in a 5th member recently and I'm reserving judgement on him, but the rest of us have been together for over a year with absolutely no issues. That may be my complete lack of empathy though. Dan Dare
So far so good. We also don't have a permanent drummer. The chap who turns out for us says we're the politest band he's ever worked with. Probably because we're all 50+ and were brought up proper, like... lee4
So far we have had no fallings out. We have learnt how we all work as individuals, and we are supportive and respectful of each other. Added to that,we have very immature tastes in humour, openly take the p**s out of each other and never ever take ourselves seriously.
stevebasshead
In my solo work (in which I perform King Crimson covers in my bedroom under the name "21st Century Schizoid Man") all of my personalities clash Seriously, never ever been in a band that didn't have interpersonal issues at some point. Been in bands where it took a good few months before the first rumblings started but I find once they've started they never truly subside. Current band I've been with for 6 months (after almost 10 years with the previous one) and dare I say it...so far so good...
RockfordStone
i've just hooked up with a band who have come from bands with interpersonal issues. all on the same wave length so it's going lovely thus far. either everyone else was the problem... or we were..... chaypup
No issues because there are no egos in my band. We do it for the fun and earn money at the same time. There have occasionally been members with egos in the band, but they get booted pretty quickly.

Cameronj279
We occasionally have a "I reckon we should do this but x thinks otherwise" but we always put everything down to a vote and that's that. I think of the main reasons we never really argue is that right from the start we all agreed that if we have something we don't like/agree with we will say and discuss it there and then. Blue
We don't have falling out because we are all mates from school. There are times we disagree, but we say what we have to say, have a vote on it, if that's needed, then move on. We have all known each other long enough to say stop being a knob, suck it up. It seems to work
mingsta
Because we're not friends. Blue
Interesting point Blue, and one which is often made. My four piece band's been together for 2 years and its all been very smooth. Both the guitarist and I know the singer separately, but essentially we were formed for the purpose of learning a set list so that we could start doing local gigs and functions. We were not friends to begin with. After two years, its fair to say that we've all become good friends, though we rarely socialise outside of a band context. I think when its that way round, its fine. But the other way round (close friends -> band) it could be a nightmare in the same way that working professionally with a close friend or partner might be. colgraff
I'm in a band that I have very recently joined. I was struck when I met them that they were all so cheerful and enthusiastic. I turned out that they, despite being in the 40s-50s, are all late starters in the gigging business so haven't become cynical and bitter yet. Its a lovely change, although it might be that I'm the one with the issues but can't see it.....
taunton-hobbit
I ran sound system shows for years, and always had '2nd jocks' to work with. I never saw any of them away from gig related stuff - it worked fine. Work is work...home is home...
BassTractor
The bands I've been in without interpersonal issues all shared one common capacity: one (1) leader with decision power. Only bands without issues that did not have one leader were all classical music ensembles where the focus was very much on the music, and one worked very hard for the duration of the rehearsal.
