lancer
I would like know, if possible what bass was used on the recording of He's The Greatest Dancer. I find it difficult to differentiate types of basses within the mix. Thanks in advance
Lozz196
Bernard was known for using a Stingray, 2eq version. Not sure if that`s what he used on this track but would guess so.
cybertect
Probably that, but take your pick from the responses here, which leads to it being mostly in his fingers http://basschat.co.uk/topic/230553-the-chicbernard-edwards-sound/
deepbass5
BC Rich Eagle bass was another fave in late 70's, but bet those recordings were the Ray into the desk
The Admiral
You may find this article from Sound on Sound interesting. Talks about the recording of Le Freak, but Nile Rodgers talks about recording the Sister Sledge album concurrently, and Bernard favoured the Ray in the studio from all that I've read. Interesting that 'He's the greatest dancer' was recorded originally as a Chic basic track, and they gave it away after Le Freak was a hit. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr05/articles/classictracks.htm Edited November 1, 2015 by The Admiral
Lynottfan
Bernard's two main recording basses were a black P Bass and a natural Stingray, on this track, a Ray. Later on in his career he also used a G&L (1000 I think ). The BC rich and a Sadowsky (later on) tended to be live basses.
ambient
He had a very distinctive way of playing, using his thumb and finger like a pick. That no doubt contributed to his sound.
garyod7
Guy going under the username belgabass has some good vids ofold chic stuff and uses an old musicman sabre and some other basses, sounds decent - also does a wee slow down of the chucking technique

Notice how close to the bridge he plays on the video (sadly his last performance - and using the Stingray - and sounding exactly like himself despite illness) - fabulous sound (using Trace Elliott plus his 2 band 1977 Stingray) http://youtu.be/M1APFyc_QtQ Edited November 4, 2015 by drTStingray

I was merely pointing out he probably didn't use that technique on many of their (Rogers/Edwards songs).

Lynottfan
Indeed He was found dead the next morning by Mr Rodgers himself iirc, sad sad day, that man had groove and then some.
