ras52 Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 What's the song with the longest intro? The vocals start at around 2:40 in this one: which is around 56% through the track. And this one arguably pushes further in precentage terms: although there are some backing vocals before, the vocal verse starts 1:48 in, or a whopping 60%. Oddly, when thinking about track length, the first three long hits I thought of - Hey Jude, Bohemian Rhapsody and O Superman - all start with unaccompanied vocals|... Quote
Bassman Steve Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 I haven't ever timed it but I reckon 'Say What' by SRV has got to be lengthy. Of course that barely counts as a song but it's a lyric. Quote
paul_5 Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 'Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me' by the Smiths takes a while to get going... Quote
Roland Rock Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 (edited) Stone Roses' "Breaking into Heaven" is a pretty long intro, maybe four minutes? Just checked this, it's 4:57 Edited November 2, 2015 by Roland Rock Quote
Beer of the Bass Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 I was talking about this with some of my band at the weekend, as we were listening to this album in the car. The vocals start at 7 minutes into a 13 minute track! Can anyone beat that? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAWC8gxDpcE Quote
mr zed Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Shine on you crazy diamond goes on for a while. Good though. Quote
franzbassist Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Floyd's "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" vocal comes in at 8:44 Quote

ras52 Posted November 2, 2015 Author Posted November 2, 2015 I also thought of this one - vocal starts just before the 50-minute mark - but it's not really a song Quote
toneknob Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Xanadu by Rush, 5mins instrumental intro on an 11m07s song. 45% intro. Quote
lojo Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 (edited) I guess its all relevant to the overall length of the song in question , but I remember as a kid watching TOTP and thinking it was cool that Sugg's just stood still for ages before singing on Night Boat to Cairo, which is not something you often saw on a pop show https://youtu.be/ZMHCAfPZPf0 Edited November 2, 2015 by lojo Quote
hairychris Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Sounds like SOP for prog. Or doom metal. Quote
Oopsdabassist Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 There can be only one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WDkdZ6QvXY Quote
sykilz Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 The ' proper' singing in Bowies 'Sound and Vision' comes in at 1.29 in a 3.00 song, although there's a bit of sighing going on before then. For a pop song it seems like forever though!, Quote

leschirons Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 I always remember Papa was a rollin stone having a really long intro (just under 4 mins or thereabouts) Obviously not the winner, but a classic. Quote
Bilbo Posted November 2, 2015 Posted November 2, 2015 Yes - The Revealing Science of God - intro drone lasts to 3.48!! Quote
gary mac Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Not the longest at two mins but one I always enjoy Quote
Hobbayne Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 The intro to Sun King from The Beatles Abbey Road is quite long at 1 min before the vocals start. Quote
ras52 Posted November 3, 2015 Author Posted November 3, 2015 Another 70s classic, vocals in at 2'53": Quote
CHW Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 (edited) I've not checked it, but Telegraph road takes a while before the vocals hit Edit: its 2:14 so not that long into it really considering the song nearly tops 15 mins Edited November 3, 2015 by CHW Quote
SubsonicSimpleton Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Very short song, but the Ballad of Jimi Hendrix by Stormtroopers of Death must win this by % terms. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTOskBmoOqE Quote
Thunderpaws Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Beggars and Theives self titled album has one of the best opening intros to a song ever. Can't remember the name of the first song though! Quote
SteveK Posted November 3, 2015 Posted November 3, 2015 Don't mean to be the party pooper here, but... We seem to be defining "intro" as anything that occurs instrumentally before the singing starts! If that's the case, I've got a whole bunch of albums consisting solely of intros Quote
