Some would probably think it's sacrilege to refinish a Warwick Infinity as it's an already gorgeous bass, but I don't get on with the natural finish... So today, I dropped it off with the fantastic Brian Eastwood to have it cleaned up, and then finished in a two pack high gloss clear coat lacquer. They'll have it for around a month but I've been informed they'll keep me updated with pics.

Watch this space! :P

Well I've had an update from the Eastwoods.

So far they've stripped the wax and finish off, leaving it looking like this:

After this any of the dents and imperfections have been removed with heat or something like that (I can't remember how they do it), they've also done a bit of routing to allow a decent Neutrik locking jack socket to fit, as we all know what the barrels are like! And then they sent me photos after three coats of lacquer... bearing in mind this is after three days, and they want it for a month - I can see where this is going!

Excited would be an understatement!

Looking really good.

I do like a good natural finish like you're doing. I was a bit confused at first, I thought you were going to stain or paint it.

What don't you get on with about oil and wax?

Posted

Looking very good.

They would probably use steam to get the dents out, as that causes the wood fibres to swell i.e. drape a damp cloth over the dent and then use a steam iron to gently heat it

Out of interest, what is it about the natural finish you didn't like? I personally love the natural finish and how you can easily maintain its appearance, as opposed a gloss finish which can look quite scratched and battered after being on the road with no easy fix. Tub of beeswax, cloth, elbow grease and you're away!

Thanks guys. The main reason for having this finish done is that it's my main gigging bass and it gets a hell of a lot of use.

I've just had it on a two week job around the Mediterranean, playing 7 nights a week and around 4 sets a day, and I've got another job coming up around America, South America, Caribbean and Bahamas - all warm climates. Whilst I love the natural finishes too, everyone has a different pH level to their sweat, and some is naturally more acidic than others, unfortunately I've got the short straw with that one, and any pale finish my sweat doesn't get on with. I could keep waxing it, but as I found with my previous corvette, it didn't really help much, and I don't have the time to keep on top of the maintenance.

With that in mind, I want the bass to sound and look as amazing as it does, but be as low maintenance too, and I figured that the best way would be to have it stripped and all the green rubbed off, and then have it sealed and coated with a good, solid 2k clear coat.

Well that makes sense. Some folk use HRT to help with night-sweats. But I guesss it's not the answer for everyone :D
Thanks for shearing.

So the first three coats which can be seen in the photos were the test / sealing coats, just to make sure no nasty reactions happen in case there's any residue from the original finish, or any nasties like that.

I've just spoken to them, and I've been informed that everything is good, and they'll be starting with the main coats tomorrow :)

Looking good so far - should look great when finished and buffed up.

Just my impressions, but due to the body shape being less "fugly" or distinctly Warwick (to my eyes at least), and now it's being given a high gloss finish - won't it look a lot more Alembicy?

After a little image search it appears some people have been either refinishing their Infinities or getting them custom made with a high gloss finish. . . nice:

High Gloss is a custom option for all Warwick master built instruments, and I believe is standard on some of the cheaper Rockbass instruments (used to be on the older Pro Series basses as well?). Strictly speaking, the Masterbuilt German models are all custom order now, so its just a finish option in addition to their natural oil and coloured oil finishes.

Good to know - IME a good oil finish feels better, but from a distance and in a photo high gloss looks stellar. A 2k clearcoat is as hard wearing as you can get though - without resorting to a carbon fibre wrap or the like!

Due to how crap the weather was yesterday, they weren't able to touch it, but the wheels were turning again today. Progress so far, slowly building the coats!

Who'd have thought Ovangkol could look so good eh?

Well they do appear to be some choice pieces - brought to life wonderfully by the finish if your pic below is anything to go by!

I'm too excited. It's been gone two weeks so another two to go :( That said, I got the P setup and restrung last night before a gig and it was good fun to play... but I did miss the Warwick!

No more pics as of yet, but I believe they're hoping to start sanding and polishing tomorrow. I think it's got around 13 coats, obviously it'll be less after sanding.

Had some photos through today during polishing. It's looking good!

There are a couple of bits that he wants to redo, which is fine by me. It's all part of the game with lacquering, there're parts where you'll sand through. You can also see the routing for the Neutrik locking socket that's being fitted too.
