I didn't know Kirk Brandon was gigging the Pack again.  I saw Theatre of Hate back in the day but I never saw the Pack; my brother saw them supporting the Ruts and I was quite envious.  I'd love to see the Pack play.

A number of bands at the St Anne's on the Sea Music Festival on Monday, which was completely free (kudos to Fylde Council). A couple of chums were in some of the bands, including 'Christine McVie' from Fleetwood Bac.

I went to see Pixies with my daughter last night. Support was a Dublin band called Sprints. I was a bit unsure at the start but they were really good and I'd recommend checking them out.

Pixies were incredible! Best gig I've been to in a long time. The new bassist, Emma Richardson, did a great job.

Rickie Lee Jones at the Union Chapel in Islington last night.

I've loved Rickie's music for over 40 years, but this was my first time seeing her live, and it was sublime.

No bass player, but ably supported by Ben Rosenblum (who picked up the low end on occasion) and Mike Dillon on percussion and vibes.

Last night Welsh punks Pizza Tramp played our local. They weren't amazing.

The opening act were absolutely brilliant though. They were a grindcore band from Bristol called Priest Crippler. They were brutally heavy and absolutely hilarious. It was part extreme metal, part standup comedy.

We braved the rain to see James Oliver last night. Loads of his banter, amazing what he gets away with. High point included him going out into the porch while playing. He greeted a smoker who apparently replied "eff off". He also whacked his 56 tele so hard against the mike stand the cable fell out...

Had a good chat at the break about what it's like to gig with Norman Watt-Roy.

Afterwards the roads were pretty floody...

I was at a local village hall on Saturday night to see the Haley Sisters from Yorkshire.  I first met Jo-Ann and Becky in the early 90s when they were in their late teens but Becky has just become a grandmother!  They have been a fixture on the British country music scene since they hit the road and provide close sibling harmonies with some good guitar work.  Becky married Brian Smith who has played in Nashville and recorded and toured with Crystal Gayle.  He is an amazing guitarist and adds a lot to the overall sound.  Becky plays semi acoustic guitar and Jo-Ann the Hofner violin bass.  I love Jo-Ann's playing as it is perfect for the songs they do and the harmonies they produce are so natural.  Their sound system is also excellent and consists of a Yamaha powered mixer feeding a Bose tower set up with small woofer to handle the bass.  The sound is clear and loud enough to not be uncomfortable.  As I play their songs on my radio programme I was asked to compare the show before sitting back to enjoy the evening.  To add to the event we enjoyed pie and peas before hand!

The photos and video were taken on mobile phones and the stage lighting played havoc with the focussing but I hope they give some idea of how the evening went.  They do have videos on their YouTube channel which will give you more of an idea of what they sound like and their song selection.

Second time this year see the Kate Bush tribute Cloudbusting.  Extraordinary gig up in the Muni Theatre, Colne, with our very own @sprocketflup, aka Dave, on duty with top bass playing (fretted, fretless and upright), singing and general bouncing duty.  Way too much talent for one person.

Check these folks out people.  If you like KB's music you will not be disappointed.  The crowd were loving it and although the pics don't reflect it, the show was pretty much a sell-out.

You don't often see two basses being played during a song.  Guitarist on a Jazz bass and our man on a fretless 5er.

BBC Philharmonic last night, playing Holsts Planets Suite. What an amazing orchestra. The layers of sound were absolutely mesmerising, and you can’t go wrong with 8 Double Basses.

The Bridgewater Hall is the perfect venue, and for once, Mrs Rayman and I felt like youngsters

I went to see the great TV Smith last night in the tiniest venue I've ever been to.. The Artisan Tap in Newcastle (Stoke on Trent).

The set was 1 ½ hours long and was great.

A few I didn't know and loads I did.

Great night.

Saw prog collective Big Big Train at Edinburgh Queen's Hall last night. Uplifting & thoroughly lovely music from an international bunch of absurdly talented multi-instrumentalist polymaths.

Came away feeling both inspired & musically inadequate!

Tyketto with support from Little Caesar and Dan Byrne at 1865 in Southampton last night.

Fantastic venue with great sound and lights. Dan Byrne was a revelation.... cracking original rock songs and my old band mate Glenn played a blinder on guitar. Haven't seen Little Caesar in probably 30 years but they still rock hard in their sleazy AC/DC-ish way and were very entertaining.

Tyketto were wonderful as always. I first saw them 35 years ago and have followed them ever since. Singer Danny Vaughn, now 63, still sounds just as good, if not better, than he did back then. He has no right to such amazing vocal pipes! Lovely to see Chris Childs (Thunder etc) on bass and to catch up with him for a pint afterwards too.

Splendid evening :)

The Mission, Holmfirth Picturedrome Friday 20th Sept

Great gig in one of my favorite venues. I have to say though that being too near to the front isn't great for the overall sound in there.. but then I have developed man-flu since so it could have just been my head.

The Planets is often assumed to be crowd-pleasing ‘classical for beginners’ but if you listen to the whole thing there’s plenty of it that’s actually quite advanced, and the end of Neptune with the offstage choir is properly spine-tingling.

I would like to confirm that (a) that’s our favourite section to sit in too, and (b) yes, you do look like youngsters 😁

Meanwhile we went to see the The Songs of Joni Mitchell project at the RNCM last night, which is Jesca Hoop, Lail Arad, Olivia Chaney and Gigi Williamson on vocals and guitars - Chaney also played piano on a couple of numbers - plus a guy whose name I sadly didn’t catch doing Jaco duty on fretless bass for a few tunes, and Josephine Oniyama as special guest for the Manchester date. Really superb stuff both in total and by each performer in their own way, confirming my maybe-controversial view that Joni Mitchell isn’t necessarily the greatest interpreter of every Joni Mitchell song. A special treat to see Oniyama live for the first time - she is a tremendous voice.

Glasgow tonight is also sold out, apparently, but if anyone up there knows how to blag a ticket I recommend it.

It’s a very ethereal moment, the choir, and the perfect way to close the experience.

Oh, and thanks, I’ll let Mrs Rayman know 👍🏻
