BigRedX
IME good band photography is mostly down to the skill of the person behind the camera, but it does help if the band and the space they are performing in are photogenic and appropriately lit.

WalMan Posted Sunday at 17:08 Share Posted Sunday at 17:08 Got back from two nights and an overnight stay Friday at Trading Boundaries to see Raul Midón on Friday and Peter Jones / Tiger Moth Tales on Saturday. Wen with wifey, one of the guitarists in my main band and his missus and we made a short weekend of it. Two very different nights stylewise but both great evenings - the first just man / guitar / voice & percussion The second started with a short 'acoustic' one man set from Peter Jones and then a longer set with the Tiger Moth Tales band. Very accomplished and English prog.
Rayman Posted Monday at 13:09 Share Posted Monday at 13:09 Khruangbin last night in Manchester. A bit of an odd one…. IMO, the Apollo is not the right venue for this. The band were fabulous of course, but the lighting was abysmal, and the sound questionable. I’d much prefer seeing them at an outdoor festival, in the sun for the chilled vibes they present. I was delighted to have Row A in the circle, thinking I was literally on the front row with a great view and sound. Wrong…. my seat was a ways off to the right with a very restricted view (couldn’t see the drummer) and a bunch of rows in front of me, which seemed to be occupied by the local basketball team. Not the venues fault, but disappointing for me. Also it was freezing! I’m usually too hot at gigs, but I had a zipped up leather jacket on throughout. They’re an amazing band, such fantastic musicians, and if you’re in the mood for chilled grooves they’re the band for you.

howdenspur Posted Monday at 14:07 Share Posted Monday at 14:07 Squeeze at Victoria Theatre Halifax last night. Not seen them before, but really impressed with the musicianship, vocal harmonies (there are 8 of them in the stage band, they all contribute), Glen Tillbrook's pipes and, of course, the tunes. Brilliant!

PaulWarning Posted Monday at 14:27 Share Posted Monday at 14:27 went to see Black Water County at the Bodega in Nottingham on Saturday, packed small venue with mosh pit, very lively and enjoyable, all of a sudden a drum stick hit me in the face and broke my glasses 😡, which took the shine off the evening somewhat 1

Graham56 Posted Monday at 16:14 Share Posted Monday at 16:14 Nick Cave at the O2 a week ago. I don't usually like huge venues like this - but... It was an intense, sad, joyful, wrenching show that completely drew the audience in, probably the best show I've seen in years. Did I say intense? That’s cool, recently I heard a song I liked and it was by them, so I went down a bit of a rabbit hole listening to a lot of their tunes and reading up on Laura Lee who it says was influenced by reggae and dub , she gets a great sound from her SX jazz and plays some nice Basslines

I love Khruangbin, and they’re playing in Dublin at the end of the week, but there’s just not enough things falling into place for me to say yes to it this time. I hope they’re touring again soon though!

I was in the front row at a bijou Chris Difford solo show a few years ago and he stopped ‘Tempted’ to berate me for leaving for a call of nature! I used the disabled loo and came back as the song finished… to be followed in by half a dozen similarly afflicted males he’d given permission to follow my example 😂

When he played a local gig a few years ago, he covered the Lou Reed song ‘Perfect Day’, and as there had been a popular charity version of it in the charts he got various members of the audience up on stage to copy singing the celebrity parts, really funny.
BigRedX Posted Tuesday at 08:31 Share Posted Tuesday at 08:31 The last time I saw Squeeze live, Jools Holland was still their keyboard player. I was in the tech crew for the university and helped load the gear in for the gig. His rig included all the heavy keyboards of the time - Yamaha CS80 synth and Yamaha CP80 electric grand piano.
nekomatic Posted Thursday at 14:14 Share Posted Thursday at 14:14 Say She She Great fun, would recommend (catch them soon before the one on the left goes on mat leave). Backing band solid and mostly invisible except for the middle of the show when the women left the stage for a break. Look, here they are!: Support from Gitkin, a three-piece playing sort of instrumental surf-dub. Not bad but not quite interesting enough to excuse them the cardinal sin of having no bass player. casapete
The Coal Porters at The Old Parcels Office in Scarborough last night. A bitterly cold evening in Scarborough, and inside wasn’t much better. However, a capacity crowd filled this lovely venue to welcome the 5 piece band featuring the legendary Sid Griffin. Two sets featuring a mixture of old standards / classic originals and some great covers of more recent stuff all done in an ‘alt-bluegrass’style. The covers included The Style Council’s ‘Walls come tumbling down’, ‘Another girl another planet’ by The Only Ones , Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ ( which was fantastic) and ‘Ooh la la’ by The Faces. All great players, especially Kerenza Peacock on fiddle, and Andrew Stafford on upright. One of those gigs where you just have a smile on your face throughout - highly recommended if you can catch them.

Steve Browning
Midge Ure at Portsmouth Guildhall. Voice seemed to take a couple of songs to warm up, but a cracking gig. Great band of youngsters with him, but he is uber talented. Surprisingly, the tune that he played (and which he said had influenced him most) was The Supernatural. Played a good few of the hits and had the audience up and singing along.
