Eddi Reader at the Stoller Hall in Manchester. Boo Hewerdine on guitar, John Douglas uku (I think!) and guitar, Alan Kelly accordion, Kevin McGuire db. Great show, included some Robert Burns, some Fairground Attraction (yes including that one) but brought something new to each of them, and some other stuff. Definite recommend.

Earthtone9 tonight at the Treehouse in Frome. Excellent performance despite the lack of bassist. 

Support band Hollow Kin were really very good.

Thoroughly enjoyed Fairground Attraction at the Royal Festival Hall last year

 

I am seeing Eddi at a one day festival in South London in August; I will be over the moon if Boo is in the band for that gig!

In Love Again has been one of my favourite albums of the year. I'd not had a chance to see them since its release in January and they lived up to my expectations. 

 

 

 

 

worthy support from Bloody Death, who were a new discovery to me; I'm going to be exploring their back catalogue...

A couple of tribute bands over the last couple of nights

 

First on Thursday night were The Musical Box at the De Montfort Hall Leicester recreating the 1973 Genesis Live album that was recorded there. As usual absolutely impeccable! A few extra tracks thrown in from Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. The strange bit was the "warm up" act which was the MB bass player, and I think the keys and drummer playing some original "progish" "music" - good in places, but a bit "out there" for a fairly large audience, getting polite applause. The Musical Box though, wow! Supper's Ready was immense!

 

Tonight was The Devout, a Depeche Mode tribute. All credit to them for the nearly 3 hour set, but tbh I could have happily lost the first hour and a half of album tracks and skipped straight to the stuff everyone knew. Very good band and a great tribute. It did take the sound man about 6 songs to get the vocals up to audible level though, and I strongly suspect the guitar parts were mimed and very low in the mix. I barely recognised My Own Personal Cheeses.

 

I've had a good couple of nights out though. Very enjoyable

Loads of bands at the Nantwich festival today, but stand out was junkyard dog blues duo , oh boy , seen them  three times before and wow, engagement , playing skills and a great gig experience rates the boys very high in my book

I'm on the last leg of my train journey from Hamburg to home after seeing Massive Wagons at Bahnhof Pauli this evening, well, yesterday now, to be pedantic 😉

 

Tiny venue, 400 max capacity but a really good gig, probably the best I've seen for a while. It was one of those punt gigs after hearing a couple of songs on the radio but totally worth it.

Oooh, Earthtone9, there's a blast from the past, I saw them supporting Misery Loves Co at Camden Underworld about a million years ago!
