Kings of Leon. Genting Arena, Birmingham, 15 minutes ago. The 5th time I've seen them and the 5th time I'm reminded why they're my favourite band. Superb stuff.

It didn't, however, help with any Thunderbird GAS. Jared used 4 different T'birds through the set and they all sounded incredible, so may have to get meself one to be a copycat.

Touche Amore & Angel Du$t at the Islington Academy last night - great gig!

Angel Du$t were very fun surfy-punk.
Touche Amore I've seen loads of times before & they're consistently one of the tightest bands I've ever seen live. Their sound was unbelievably clear last night - you could hear the definition of every note which makes a pleasant change from the general mush most London venues seem to turn heavy music into!

Squeeze, last night at Pontardawe Arts Centre - my favourite small music venue around these parts

Almost all the old hits and some decent newer stuff; one of the few late '70's - '80's bands I didn't get to see back in the day. Glenn Tillbrooks voice as plaintive and distinctive as ever and playing some nifty lead guitar; (I saw him solo in the same venue a couple of years back) songwriting partner Chris Difford happy out of the spotlight strumming rhythm and just singing lead on "Cool for cats"

The awesome Yolanda Charles on bass (a 5-string Jazz bass) - fluid and funky basslines played with totally effortless cool; really the antithesis of the "less is more" style I generally prefer, but it complemented their simple classic pop format surprisingly well. Bass mixed too low as usual though!

Alter Bridge playing with the Parallax Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall last week. I am sure it was awesome BUT the sound where I was sitting (quite high up in the rausing circle) was so indistinct and muddy that it really detracted from the show. Could barely hear Mark Tremonti's guitar. I am assuming that the acoustics in the hall were to blame but who knows and a real shame as the sound from the band plus 50 piece orchestra should have been immense. The good thing is that it was all filmed so I can look forward to the DVD when it comes out to hear what I missed!!

Jamiraquai in Manchester last night, decent length of set which included a good mix of old and new tracks.
Jay's voice was great and hats off to Paul for a brilliant performance covering all eras of the bands material perfectly.
Awesome!

The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan at the O2 Arena last Sunday!

Steely Dan were fantastic.... but the Doobie Brothers were something else! Energetic, versatile, passionate and so much more. Absolute masters of their craft whether playing blues, rock, r'n'b, folk or any of their other styles...!!

I was at O2, too - in fact I had tickets for every night. Have to agree, Steely Dan and Doobie Bros were amazing from the first bar to the last of the evening. Highlight for me was Babylon Sister but that is a tough choice from what was a superlative night of music.

Would disagree about Chic - they Jive-bunnied the stuff too much for my liking. Singers are a bit weak, too. My main issue is that the bass player isn't Bernard - which isn't his fault - and he massively overplayed - which was. Chaka Khan was incredible. She has surely found a time machine from somewhere as she looked and sounded like she did back in the 80s.

Saturday was mixed. Chris Isaak was fantastic - seen him before but he was better this time. Wicked Game was so atmospheric, crystal clear and you could have heard a pin drop. One of the best things I have ever heard anyone perform live. Hall and Oates were MASSIVELY disappointing and for so many reasons. I saw them 20 years ago and they were as good as a band can be, what a shame.

Bluesfest is going to be 4 nights next year - I wonder who is going to be on?

Interesting re Chaka Khan, she clearly still has a massive voice - however from where I was (quite high up looking straight at the stage) the sound was a bit dodge. Plus, I'm only familiar with a bit of the stuff she did. I was trying to work out what 5 string jazz the bass player was using - the headstock looked a bit Sire ish.

The sound got much better with Chic. Jerry Barnes probably does a bit too much but I rather like his approach, some inappropriate pops and bangs maybe but it's quite joyous stuff and those concerned about the bass player being anonymous need not worry about Jerry. I assume he is a little less exuberant in the studio; we had the same debate regarding the Glastonbury set.

The drummer gives it a go and the singers are (IMO) good.

I assume only Nile is an original member so the cover band tag is a easy to apply. I'm just happy to hear this stuff live and from the reaction of those in the crowd so are plenty of others.

Tir na nOg, Irish progressive folk duo. I have been a fan since I first heard them on John Peel's show in 1972. Their eponymous album was the second album I ever bought. I saws them at the Kitchen Garden Cafe, Birmingham last Weds. It was a band outing with my current band, who I was delighted to learn have been long term fans also!

I took along my 45 year old album, and asked them to sign it! Which they graciously did!! I was so happy- I am such a fangirl! It was a lovely and somewhat surreal evening.
