mentalextra Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Being advertised recently, I wouldn't have thought the audiences would be 'compatable'? Maybe I'm wrong? Quote
discreet Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Both bands were formed in the 70s and both enjoyed pop chart success during the 80s, so maybe not so strange... Quote
oldslapper Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Could just be a reference to what the audience will want to do to Mr H? Quote

RhysP Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 That means I can save time by not going to see two bands I don't like at once. Quote
Hobbayne Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 When The Jam first toured America they were the support act for Blue Oyster Cult. Now theres incompatibility for yer! I think they got booed off stage too. Quote
CamdenRob Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I went to watch the stranglers a couple of years back at Camden roundhouse.... There we're absolutely no women in the audience and I was the only person under 50... also I spent 45 minutes queing for the toilet and that is my only memory of the whole experience. Quote
SICbass Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I was a big fan as a kid in the 70s and early 80s, but can't really imagine them without High Cornwell up front. I saw him on a local TV channel here in Berlin about 10 years ago and he was playing solo in a restaurant . That struck me as being a bit of a shame, although he didn't seem unduly upset about the fact. Quote
Kirky Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I once saw Teutonic noise merchants Einstürzende Neubauten supported by Showaddywaddy. Simple Minds with The Stranglers seems perfectly sensible! Quote
jacko Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 monsters of rock 1987 I saw Bon Jovi supported by Dio, Wasp, metallica , anthrax and Cinderella. That was kind of a strange mix of 'support' and headline act. Quote
Panamonte Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015
I once saw Teutonic noise merchants Einstürzende Neubauten supported by Showaddywaddy.
!!!!!!!!! More information needed Quote
Zenitram Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Also: Simple Minds were originally a punk band called Johnny and the Self-Abusers. Quote
Zenitram Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 And let's also consider the fact that "Simple Minds The Stranglers" is actually an anagram of Tightness Reprimand Smells. Quote
KevB Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I can see a bit of potential overlap. I'm guessing each band is hoping that a few undecided fans might be pushed into a ticket by the prospect of seeing the other one also on the same bill for not a lot more money. Quote

Bassmonkey Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 I'm going to the Leeds gig. Heard a collaboration of the two bands on Grip the other day. Sounds great. Quote
Paul S Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Going to see them at the O2 and looking forward to the evening's entertainment. Quote
pineweasel Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Two bands whose excellent early records were characterised by distinctive, prominent basslines. Quote
BigRedX Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 (edited) I'd have gone to see both bands "back in the day" had they been playing anywhere near where I was living at the time. However neither band has made any records I'd want to own since the early 80s. Edited November 4, 2015 by BigRedX Quote
Kirky Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 (edited)
!!!!!!!!! More information needed
It was at the Kilburn National back in the late 80s/early 90s. The whole place was shaking when EN played - and it's not the most stable building (no pun intended). As far as I recall the crowd seemed to enjoy the support. No idea if it was a deliberate post-modernist ironic booking or just a nightmare for some poor promoter.
I was lucky enough to see Simple Minds 2 nights in a row the week New Gold Dream was released, at a pretty small club in Auckland. They were awesome. Not sure I'd bother now. The Stranglers have never appealed to me. Edited November 4, 2015 by Kirky Quote
Big_Stu Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Simple Minds closed Edinburgh's Usher Hall for quite a length of time and also stopped rock concerts there due to being so loud that the ancient stucco ceiling decoration started falling onto the crowd. The concerts started again because I saw The Moody Blues there a few years later. Quote
