chris_b
This was a "session" put together for a local TV company. Motown never recorded like this. The Funk Brothers , strings and vocals would have been recorded separately.
scalpy
Great close up of his right hand technique, just a shame they weren't recording 'Grapevine' the Gladys Knight version! I can never do the chorus in that one.

drTStingray
Nice to hear the intricacies of the bass line beyond the octave line at the beginning. Must say I don't particularly like the bass sound - a little coarse, particularly when heard higher in the mix. I guess the best available at the time and didn't really matter because it would be far less audible through a contemporary Dansette record player or Bush transistor radio. Even less so on MW stations.

WRoberts
Oh, man! Look at Jamerson's hand position? It's so funky on the intro -- C on the A to open G. All these years I've been playing it like EVERYBODY on Earth -- C on A to G on D string. Duh. This too short video has already got me shifting concepts. Too bad there seems to be a lack of musicians interested in MoTown to do a damned thing with it.

scalpy
I saw a great bass player Friday night who only used his index finger and maybe occasionally his pinky. Great sound and great feel. Who cares if the technique gets the job done.

EssentialTension
Not all upright bassists use a one finger technique but I'm pretty sure that's where Jamerson's right hand one finger hook originiates.
ivansc
I bought my 62 precision in 63. Exact same model as the funk machine. James played his ornate bass lines and became famous for it.. I got told to stop being so busy and play the root.
