This was a "session" put together for a local TV company. Motown never recorded like this. The Funk Brothers , strings and vocals would have been recorded separately.

Great close up of his right hand technique, just a shame they weren't recording 'Grapevine' the Gladys Knight version! I can never do the chorus in that one.

Nice to hear the intricacies of the bass line beyond the octave line at the beginning.

Must say I don't particularly like the bass sound - a little coarse, particularly when heard higher in the mix. I guess the best available at the time and didn't really matter because it would be far less audible through a contemporary Dansette record player or Bush transistor radio. Even less so on MW stations.

I read somewhere it was also mixed low to stop pickup arms jumping out of the groove (but don't think that would apply to a Dansette! maybe to a more hi-fi radio station deck)

scalpy, have you seen this?

Brain expanded, fingers waiting to catch up to nail chorus 3!

Oh, man! Look at Jamerson's hand position? It's so funky on the intro -- C on the A to open G. All these years I've been playing it like EVERYBODY on Earth -- C on A to G on D string. Duh. This too short video has already got me shifting concepts. Too bad there seems to be a lack of musicians interested in MoTown to do a damned thing with it.

You're partially right, but if the Dansette arm did jump out of the groove we would put a Ha'penny on the arm, just over the stylus, to prevent that happening. :D

Yep, great shame that, Motown is the ultimate feel-good music for me. When I finally get round to hanging up my punk playing I intend to start/join a Motown style band.

As I posted in the other similar thread, 'cause it's something I feel quite strongly about regarding modern teaching methods and technique.

No apologies for being boring.

[i]"Great stuff.

But he would have failed grade 1 with that technique today. ;)

I wonder how many "Institute Taught" bass players are now going to fit pickup covers on their Precisions and adapt their right and left hand techniques after seeing that? I saw a great bass player Friday night who only used his index finger and maybe occasionally his pinky. Great sound and great feel. Who cares if the technique gets the job done.

Exactly my point.

I bought my 62 precision in 63. Exact same model as the funk machine.

James played his ornate bass lines and became famous for it..
I got told to stop being so busy and play the root. :D
