Paul S
After much discussion and trialing I have come to the conclusion that the P bass pickup I like the most is the Fender Original, sometimes called the '62 Re-issue. I have just bought an '85 MIJ Fender Jazz Bass Special - 32" scale and uber-light body. This fella here, in fact: [attachment=204481:DSC06896.JPG] Very nice but the tone is possibly a little weak. If I decide to change the pups, what Jazz pickup would make a suitable 'old school' partner for a Fender Original P? I have no idea about Jazz bass pickups. Or are there any already matched pairs that give a similar old school sound? Ta much. Paul
Twigman
I can tell you what NOT to use.....don't use an Allparts bridge J pickup....I partnered one up with a Fender Original P pickup and it really didn't work at all. That particular bass now has a matched set of Aguilars in it and sounds sweet.

project_c
if I was looking for a pj set I'd go with Aguilar, they sound great. http://youtu.be/1exrD10v4mg
Paul S
Thanks for the link - that video is nicely done and very interesting. Decent vintage tone from the P bass pup, never heard an Aguilar before.
iiipopes
A few years ago Fender made a "55" split-coil humbucker J pickup. That is what I would use, to keep the humbucking to go with the P-pickup. You can find new old stock or used ones here and there.

Paul S
Small update - I played this through my gigging rig last night and it does sound rather nice as is. Bottom end suddenly flowered Perhaps not that vintage, but certainly got balls enough for my rock band.
