Geek99 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 about buying a six string electric. In the bad old days I used to have one and I always wanted to be good at it but found I much preferred bass. I keeping looking at six string multi fx and battered Strats that come up on here occasionally that mercifully someone else buys first (there was a cheap MIK one a while back that I was very close to pulling the trigger on). I don't want to turn to the Dark Side Anyone else wobbled from the righteous path like this ? Quote
skidder652003 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 can't help Im afraid, having bad gas for an acoustic 6 string as well, just go with it and it will pass! Quote
Jazzneck Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I have a foot on both paths and maybe a third as I try to play lap steel as well. Go for it and be damned, I say! Quote
chris_b Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 You're not a bass player, you're a musician. Play as many musical instruments as you can. Quote
odysseus Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I got an acoustic 6 string and a PRS Tremonti. Go for it! Quote
mr zed Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Buy a 6 string electric bass. There........better now! Quote
NickD Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 (edited) I don't see anything that needs fighting here. It's nice to have options. I dig the 6 string out from time to time, and I've not turned into a slavering, volume obsessed freak yet. I find that, as a bass player (of sorts) I approach it quite unconventionally anyway, and because of the different limits of the instrument I often and up taking some cool ideas for bass out of any session. It's all music. Edited November 9, 2015 by NickD Quote
MrDaveTheBass Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 It's OK as long as you don't think of it as a guitar, but instead as a 6-string piccolo bass. Quote
discreet Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 (edited) I thought this was going to be some kind of confession going by the thread title. Mind you, I'm not sure I'd publicly admit to having GAS for an *l*ctr*c g**t*r, so maybe it is... (I bought a Harley Benton Strat a while back. Hee, hee.) Edited November 9, 2015 by discreet Quote
ribbetingfrog Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 The great Billy Sheehan reccomends all bass players learn guitar too. Much better to write songs on for a start. Also, always helps you better understand your bandmates. Quote
Jazzneck Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Just remember that you are a bass player. I found this quote on fretboard.co.uk which, as I'm really a bass player, made me smile. "You do all the 'widdly widdly' bits, and just leave the hard stuff to me." Anyone know who said it in the first place? Quote
6feet7 Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I used to play guitar until I saw the 'light' but still keep hankering after 6 stringers and think how lovely they look and I really should buy one again. But then I remember I was crap at playing guitar and no amount of time, practice or lessons made any difference, so I stick with bass and remain happy. Quote
Bilbo Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I have a Gibson ES175 and a. Takamine CD132SC nylon acoustic. I also have an Antoria steel sting from way back. For most of my life, I have had more guitars than basses. Quote

hairychris Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 As I came over to bass after 20+ years on guitar I can't really say anything! Then again I've gone to the even darker side & taken up keyboards this year. Quote
fretmeister Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I've got a couple of guitars - an ancient Argos nylon string acoustic that sounds way better than it should, an Epiphone Zakk Wylde Les Paul and a USA Strat. I also borrow my daughter's sax every now and again. I had lessons on the alto for years when I was a kid so it's great having a go. The more instruments the better! Quote

neepheid Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 Buy whatever you like, there's no right and wrong (except for the comedy angle of course). In terms of "wobbling from the righteous path" - not since I found it. I'm probably going to get told I'm "wrong" but I'm glad I've specialised in bass. I tried guitar a long time ago and I just didn't "get it". So I don't really care about it. I respect and admire those who can coax pleasing sounds from guitars but I'm not one of them and I have no desire to learn either. Quote
Norris Posted November 9, 2015 Posted November 9, 2015 I can't really play guitar but am currently building myself a telecaster. This is as an introduction to guitar building preparing for the main event - building basses. It won't stop my enjoyment of my telecaster though as I've hankered after one for a long time despite my obvious lack of talent in that direction Quote
