Headphone splitter and impedances

One for the brainy people who understand impedance, buffering etc. :-(

My setup uses a modest interface with a single headphone output. When I've brought in a singer I've previously used one of these

and given them my "louder" pair of headphones while used my "quieter" pair. Having mislaid the little beggar I'm now looking at replacement options. Am I right in thinking that the "loud" pair was sucking signal from the "quiet" pair, in a path-of-least-resistance way? Am I also right in thinking that I'd get the same result if I got a passive splitter like this

and that I'd need to get an active unit like this

to be able to balance both pairs?

Thanks in advance, o clever people!
