fretmeister
The Sadowsky preamp is supposed to be very good. Might be worth looking at. I've got Glockenklang in my Marleaux and it's very nice.

Treb
Love the J-retro, John East clearly knows a thing or two about equalisation. He's quite a pleasure to deal with should you feel the need to contact him. Brilliant piece of kit, can't fault it.
fretmeister
Have you tried the J-Retro, just for a comparison?
A friend has a Retro (could be J or U not sure) in a self build bass - he's a luthier- id say the Retro had more range in the EQ. As for basic sound though the basses and the pickups were very different so not great for a bass v bass comparison. The retro had a higher output, if that is important to you. (it's not to me)
rmcki
I have the J-Retro, but was considering changing to the J-Retro flat response. I thought I would do a sanity check before changing.

spyder
I really like the Glockenklangtwo band preamp. Its more hifi then the East with the treble set very high around 12k for more sparkle and bass set low at 40Hz. It is VERY transparent so will show how good your pickups are. three
I've never been a big fan of the J-retro as a unit (though I admire Jon's work in general). I prefer Sadowsky (available as a pedal too) for a J. I have an Agi OBP3 too - impressive but in a Spector not a Fender type
Kiwi
Noll circuits are very clean and hi fidelity. Klaus knows his stuff also. I like how the East circuits handle the high end - clean but not too brittle.
When I'm playing, I'm too busy playing to be able to fiddle with the controls even if they are right there on my bass. When I'm not playing the amp is always near enough even on the bigger stages. TBH I find passive volume and tone for each pickup together with a selector switch far more useful. Set up a sound that enhances each pickup and flick between them using the switch depending on what you need on each song. IMO all of them sounded better with the pre-amp off. Mind you I was playing through a very nice sounding and tonally versatile valve amp. BottomE
I've got an onboard Audere JZ3 on one bass and outboard Sadowsky pre-amp for other basses. Had them both for years now and very reliable and high quality. Its down to what you prefer.
Telebass
How about a...no, can't think of one... I dislike actives with a passion, but if forced, a P-Retro is what I'd have.
rmcki
Thanks for all the replies, lots to think about. The flat response j-retro still seems very tempting.
MoonBassAlpha
I just spotted a new preamp on the East website, UNI. Lots more internal settings you can faff about with, including flat or shape option and adjustable "window" for the bass range. Sorry if this is old news...
