The bass continues its pounding riff while the guitar 'speaks' over the top. Some nice 'pinched' harmonics, and good phrasing; the piece is short, however, and has, despite a certain richness of timbre, quite a minimalist feel (no drums, nor other ornamentation...). Not an easy exercise, as all is exposed, no place to hide. Successful, none the less. We have here an 'off the cuff' interpretation of the photo, with the bass supplying a low-end continuum, allowing the guitar to soar and express all the anguish of the tree's grimace with some virtuosity. The bass is a little more hesitant, and could have carried a bit more weight, or authority, although the riffs and variants are executed well enough. There's a void, normally filled by the percussion, which the bass gamely attempts to fill, but falls just that little bit short. The theme comes through, however, so the challenge is won; an enjoyable listen, all the better for not being over-charged. My next post in this topic will feature... 'Die Geschichte von Hildegarde und Godomar (a German fairty tale)', from fingers211 ... Until then... Have a nice day Douglas

The tale is faded out, to be replaced by a pretty solid rock number, à la 'Rocking all over the World', where the lyrics proceed to relate the whole sad adventure, including a 'sing-along' section. The ambience evolves through a lead guitar spot, to become a festival of chorused voices, romping along to a complete train wreck of an ending. Sly humour permeates throughout this work, with many a wink and a nod, with more than a hint of authenticity ringing through. The lyrics are excellent, the heavy, if predictable, backing is entirely in keeping; even more so as the revellers join in towards the ending. There, too, we are convinced by the falling apart, and almost relieved, as it could have gone on for much, much longer (at least until the pumps were dry...). Full marks for capturing the entirety of the photo, with a concept very aptly executed. OK, then, when you're ready..? All together now... “Godomar... Godomar... I can't hear you at the back there..! The low singing is doubled by equally low rasping horns (we can reveal that these are 'zukra'. Further details of this traditional instrument can easily be found on Wikipedia...). The voice drones on, warning all that a sneeze is imminent, punctuated with more timpani rolls. Stumped for words, the tune repeats, but now the litany is joined by a posed nursery rhyme, sung by a dancing circle of children. The slow pace is held by yet another voice, reciting more sneeze-related doggerel. The poor tree seems plagued by a continuous series of sternuations and baiting from the surrounding youngsters, until released by a final drum stroke. A rather literal interpretation, belying the static nature of the sculpture in the photo, adding a sense of movement, in contrast to the eternal suspense of the sneeze which will never come. A bit long and overdrawn, maybe (but, then again, trees are not the most fleet of subjects...). My next post in this topic will feature... 'Grimm', from Skol303 ... Until then... Have a nice day Douglas

A fairly traditional bass covering some rather less conventional bass tones, then in slides a surreptitious drawbar organ; we build up to speed with what is, in essence, a common-or-garden 12-bar blues format. We're not in our comfort zone, however, as 'voices', didgeridoos and various insubstantial tentacles brush across our hearing. The drums continue unperturbed, apparently unaware of the vibrant life force pulling us in all directions, as the bass lines morph and twist sonically, whilst maintaining the pulse until, at the very end, the riot of uncontrolled nature finally has its sway and brings all to a glitchy end. So. Now we know. This is the music that triffids dance to. Unsettling, because of, and not despite, the familiar form used to lull our senses into a wicked trap. The overbearing odour of sweet perfumes, the giddy sway of towering stalks, the hypnotic drumming... No-one here gets out alive. Now we truly know what it sounds like to be devoured by triffids. I may give up gardening. My next post in this topic will feature... 'I Loved Her Since We Were Seeds (Come Back Treesa)', from the boy ... Until then... Have a nice day Douglas

Straight in..! Needs a health warning; the high volume of this straight rock could catch out an unwary listener. 'Crunch' guitars à la T-Rex, a rather muted rock'n'roll bass, a plodding bass drum and 'machine gun' snare strokes fill out a rather 'tiled bathroom' singing voice. The lyrics save the situation, relating the desperate pleas of a forlorn suitor whose other half has been taken from him. Altogether a sad tale, not best served by the relentless backing which rapidly grates like a chorus of chainsaws. The playing itself is adequate, it's the mixing and general production which lets the effort down. Very much appropriate in subject for the picture, though, and not badly sung (for a tree...); the title alone is worthy of mention for fitness of purpose. Could/should have been a hot contender; disappointed. My next post in this topic will feature... 'Jack The Lad', from lurksalot ... Until then... Have a nice day Douglas Edited November 25, 2015 by Dad3353

This version (thought by some to be the original, performed by the author himself...) has the sparse, hand-clapped chorus and backing vocals that have become the signature and trademark that we all love so much, with the added bonus of the repeated intro bass line at each verse. The regional accent, (unfortunately authentic, too...), makes it difficult for some modern listeners, less versed in the native dialects of the time, to follow all the nuances of the tale, but are aided by the helpful repetition of the key lines of the verses. It is to be hoped that those that say that “True folk music is dead...” may reflect on the error of their ways and rejoice that, since the demise of the acoustic guitar (for lack of resonant trees since the overheating of the planet...), the electric bass, once thought of as a humble instrument suited only to a shunned spot at the back of the stage, blossoms to its rightful role as centrepiece of this erstwhile ditty. This is a solo upright bass, aptly plucked by the scatting vocalist in fine unison. Freestyle, with a minimum of carried theme to keep the piece on track, but with continual variation both in timing, expression and melody (of sorts...). Joyous, lightweight, fresh; a technical exercise moulded into a complete work in its own right. Quite some degree of virtuosity, with never a moment of self-indulgence to spoil the aplomb displayed. The vocals leave the bass to shine under a solo spotlight towards the end, and return to underline once again the theme and lead us out in style. An excellent, original demonstration of that which a tree would sing to itself. These slip away, leaving the centre spot to a convoluted bass line, soon interwoven with others, twisting their way over the gentle strokes relegated to the distance but unwilling to give way completely; rightly, as it turns out, as they have the last soothing word. A delicate piece, with only one instrument, but constructed in strata, giving an almost 3D effect. The vocals thicken to sing the chorus line, followed by a Gilmore-esque solo. The 'thoughts aloud' continue; the bass is bobbing about deftly all this time, aptly underpinning the structure. The initial drowsiness is forgotten as we jog along peacefully to the conclusion and restful resolution. Yet another interesting and thoughtful interpretation of the picture, containing an elegant contradiction between the inertia of the sleepy stump and an almost jaunty trip 'down South', following in the wake of the seasonal exodus of the birds. Well written, very well played, making ample use of the instruments and arrangement without overcrowding. I'd have brought the voice further forward to better appreciate the astute lyrics, although that could just be my deficient hearing. Discreetly classy; very good indeed. My next post in this topic will feature... 'Yawning', from alibabu ... Until then... Have a nice day Douglas

I hope that at least some of you may be inspired to give the pieces a listen, and perhaps vote for your 3 favourites. All of them can be heard here... November Composition Challenge Voting ... and this 'Play of the Day' here … 'Yawning', from alibabu ... A softly resonant bass drum and gently shuffling brushed snare announce a very discreet 'pad' keyboard lending support to a solo lead legato bass gliding harmoniously in the foreground. Divers percussions add veiled movement; a more traditional bass tucks itself neatly in the corners. A pause for breath, the bass steps forward slightly as the fretless gives way to a delayed guitar which takes us on another audio journey, floating over the continuing keys and percussions. The piece comes to an elegant close; our feet return to ground level as the delicate drums fade out. An elegant piece, thoughtfully constructed and performed with some virtuosity. The title gives the link to the picture; despite this, the authoritative playing prevent any soporific effect, we are not reduced to drowsiness, but rather follow the twists and folds of the meanderings with interest. One or two moments of tension, but the edifice is maintained intact throughout, and bears repeated listening with no effort. Excellent. Here endeth my ramblings for this month; more next time, I hope. Until then... Have a nice day Douglas Edited November 26, 2015 by Dad3353

Bilbo
Your review of mine kind of hit my concept right on the head, Dad. 'That which a tree would sing to itself'.
