solo4652
Hi, I'm looking for a bass with the following features 4 string (definitely) Passive (probably) Wide neck with wide string spacing. My P-bass is 43mm at the nut, and I think I'll struggle with less than that J style pup configuration, giving a wide tonal spread Glass-like, smooth neck for easy playability Prefer secondhand, up to £250 ish So, something like a J-bass with a wide neck, or a P-bass with a J-tone. (?) I'm hoping I'm making some sort of sense here. All ideas gratefully received Steve
NJE
Hello, A fender Mark Hoppus Jazz bass may be worth a look. It has jazz body with a Precision Neck but has a P bass pickup. with a few extra pounds you could get a jazz pickup put in at the bridge and you would have the classic P+J pickup combo and a snazzy looking bass too. They turn up quite regularly on ebay for not much cash.
spinynorman
You make perfect sense, I have the same problem with narrow necks. One option would be to buy a fully loaded J body and a P neck and bolt them together. Probably cost more than £250 though, if you want original Fender parts. Darkstrike
I added a Mighty Mite P neck, from StewMac, to my jazz bass, great combo. You could pick up a Squier Jazz cheap, get one of them, and you'd be in buisness. It's a real nice neck, satin finish, ready for tuners, and drill holes for the body joint. With the Squier, you could use the tuners/bolts etc. off the original neck. markytbass
There are some Mighty Mite P necks on ebay bidding starts at £40. I bought a jazz neck off them a few weeks ago.

Darkstrike
Yeah, £40 is a steal, espcially for such a nice neck, I was never expecting a rolled fretboard!

Mr. Foxen
I bought a Jazz copy a stuck a lefty P neck on it, turned out real nice except for the fiesta red fading to pink in the sun.
solo4652
How about a Squier Vintage Modified P bass, with a J pup added?? Would that work?
OldGit
My 80's Japanese Jazz 62 RI import has a 40mm nut. That's 2mm wider than a normal Jazz. As it's my first Fender Jazz, I didn't realise for ages. It just felt more P like than I'd expected. Then someone pointed it out. Should be able to get one for your budget. PM me for contacts. And there was me assuming that something called a Precision bass would have a Precision neck. Stupid of me, really. Hang on a minute - does this mean that the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz has a Precision neck!? If so, I'll buy one!
markytbass
does this mean that the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz has a Precision neck!?
I wouldn't know, my VMJ came with a Stagg neck stuck on it. Only paid £75 mind.

Metal-Mariachi
I found a slightly modified used Mark Hoppus. It had 2 tone controls added, so there is room in the PG, cavity for a VVT set up with a J pickup added. I swapped necks on mine, partly because I didn't like the wide P neck it came with and I had a maple board, block inlay neck I wanted to use.. solo4652
The Mark Hoppus route looks quite promising. Anybody got one they're looking to sell?
Tait
not likely on here. a while ago i was looking for one for ages, not a single one popped up. theres normally one or two on ebay though.
dmz
You could try these people: http://www.bhefnerco.com/bass.htm An alternative to Warmouth I suppose. I got a nice maple Jazz bass body and mated it with a fretless Fender Japan Precision neck, Added a set of DiMarzio UltraJazz pickups and a set of stacked pots, a Badass III bridge and bobs your uncle ! See results here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...panese+fretless Good to deal with and great pricing. I would order neck and body separately - don't believe I got stung by customs ! Could also look at rondo - http://www.rondomusic.com/product828.html Good luck in your quest !
