Kiwi Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Just enough chordal technique to make the song work. I didn't like the tone he was getting though. I wish he'd used something a little brighter for solo playing. Have to confess I've been a closet Abe Laboriel fan for a while. The CHiP's TV series was formulaic and boring but he did some incredible playing on the incidental music in the 70's after pwning the original composer. The producers apparently left him to his own devices in the studio! You can hear him on the original theme tune here, its not as flashy as the incidental stuff but he's funky as hell: Quote
Dood Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 gosh! The memories! I didnt even know what a bass guitar was back then! Quote
NickThomas Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Thats just pure class .... I've been a Laboriel fan since his contribution to The Nightfly Nick Quote
Kiwi Posted July 9, 2007 Author Posted July 9, 2007 Yeah there's something so musically complete about just bass and vocals. Jaco and Joni did something like that on Mingus and Heijra Quote
alexclaber Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Righteous! I wouldn't say his tone is lacking brightness, just a smidgeon too much bottom and too little midrange. But we're talking very small amounts! Very reminiscent of Jaco/Joni... Alex Quote
OldGit Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 So nice to see a solo that isn't slapping at 100 mph Oh and CHIPS again, of course Quote
OldGit Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007
CHIPS looks like a great show.
Awwww Too young to have seen Chips Quote
bass_in_ya_face Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Aw man CHips!...never noticed the bass when I was younger....I do now thanks Quote
Bloodaxe Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Be nice if they were both playing the same song. Agree with you on the CHiPs thing though, there were more than a few dead funky US theme tunes from that era - was he a serial perp? Quote
OldGit Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 There's some pretty fine bass playing on some contemporary kids programs as well.. Tracey Beaker for one Quote
Tee Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Chips was one of my favs back in the day, as a kid in the 80s. I loved all the theme tunes to tv shows like that, Starsky and Hutch, The Professionals, Magnum PI, Hart to Hart, Knight Rider, The A-Team, Lalo Schifrin scores. Funnily enough i was playing violin at that age, lol. Quote
Kiwi Posted July 10, 2007 Author Posted July 10, 2007
So nice to see a solo that isn't slapping at 100 mph
In which case you probably wouldn't be interested in the incidental music. I did end up recording some of it years and years ago on cassette tape but I have no idea where those tapes are (probably thrown out) or even if they were playable after all this time. (Erm, not that I have a cassette player now anyway...) Say does anyone have cable access to a channel which plays repeats of old programmes like CHiPs? Quote
Kiwi Posted July 10, 2007 Author Posted July 10, 2007
Bravo was showing it not too long ago.
Wikkid! I think it might have been around series 6 when Abe got started - any chance you could have a listen and record any for us? Quote
Tee Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 I'm not sure if they'll show it again soon. I t was part of an 80s tv series thing they were doing a while back. But i'll keep an eye out. I can't record digitally though Quote
Golchen Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 I really like Abe's playing. I have some great live (ahem......... Christian gospel) records by singer Ron Kenoly with Laboriel playing fantastic bass lines. Quote
ARGH Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 MAN MASSIVE CHiPS FLASHBACK!!!! I loved that show when I was a kid. Quote
