Frankieabbott Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 Could anyone recommend a short scale bass? Or at least give me some names to check out online. Quote

scrumpymike Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 If you want a distinctive-looking, top-quality short-scale, then check out the Gibson Les Paul Junior DC for sale on this forum at £450. They are superb, I've got one (paid well over £800 new for mine) and I can highly recommend them. They were a one-off special in Gibson's funky Pelham Blue 'custom' finish. Quote
kodiakblair Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 @ikay That's exactly the one I was going to suggest. Besides Scott being a fantastic player he's been refining his short scale needs for years. Now he's decided get them produced means the design is finished. Check his FB page. https://www.facebook.com/shortscalebass/?fref=ts Quote
Iheartreverb Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 I have a Fender mustang and musicmaster. The musicmaster is a late 70's American built, really really heavy and for most requires a pickup upgrade but can be found between £50-£550 easily. Good money for what it is. My mustang is a newer Japanese made 70's reissue. Slightly slimmer neck, much lighter bass but I get much less sustain and the tuners don't feel as good. Although the rest of the build/ finishing is spot on! The new Fender starcaster and Coronado basses are both short score and feel and sound great. If you want to balance the shorter neck with a bigger body. Vintage vibe for days too. Hope this helps! Quote
Paul S Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 if you are looking for new, Thomann have a decent selection: http://www.thomann.de/gb/short_scale_basses.html I would give Danelectro a mention, they do a couple of short scale models. I have a Longhorn bass and it is very quirky, very light and very eye catching. Sounds huge, too. Quote
three Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 There are more short-scale options than ever now - some very high-end professional instruments too (SW-1, Spector Shorty, Alembic). Have a look in the Gear Porn section - there's a short-scale thead that should give you some ideas re: brands, shapes, options etc. Quote
ead Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Also talk to All thumbs on here. He is developing a range of shorties as they're his passion. Quote
kodiakblair Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 All thumbs is Scott Whitley. His basses get linked too in posts 6 & 8. Quote
Frankieabbott Posted December 3, 2015 Author Posted December 3, 2015 Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions. I last played bass around 30 years ago. Used to have a Fender Mustang which played pretty well, but in hindsight, sounded a bit woolly on some frets on the E string. I didn't understand things like set up and action in those early days......just wanted to make some noise....if that noise was in tune then all the better! I'm approaching 60 now and fancy playing again. Fancying being a bass slapping geriatric. Have £250 to spend. Looking to get a Dean Evo XM. Quote
kodiakblair Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 Frankieabbot Funny you mention the Dean Evo I bought mine from the afore named Scott Whitley,it's an OK wee bass,he added an EMG preamp. Quote
Frankieabbott Posted December 3, 2015 Author Posted December 3, 2015 EMG preamp? I think they were called 'active electronics' when I was a young feller, lol. I need to get up to speed with all things modern bass. Apparently some now have 5....6 or even more strings. Quote
jazzyvee Posted December 3, 2015 Posted December 3, 2015 If you have a hefty budget I can highly recommend a high end short scale from Alembic. http://www.alembic.com/prod/stanley.html Quote

Frankieabbott Posted December 5, 2015 Author Posted December 5, 2015 Have received an early crimbo pressie. Currently banging out the bass intro to the Formula One programme. So my current repertoire is one piece. Quote
Frankieabbott Posted December 5, 2015 Author Posted December 5, 2015 A cheap but (very) cheerful Ibanez Mikro. Currently getting accustomed to the various tones that I can get throug the little amp that I usually use to play my guitar. Thoroughly enjoying nurdling on it. Playing it as it came out of the box and so far so good. Quote
