BassAgent
So I have this gorgeous and fantastic 1966 Jazz Bass. I understand everything about that bass, except for one thing: the neck stamp: I know the 7 stands for a Jazz Bass neck, Jan 66 explains itself and A is the neck width. But what is that little "14" for? The employee?
Frankieabbott
Intriguing. I have no idea but feel that I ought to offer something of an answer at least. 1) Employees Mark. 2) A rare 7" fretboard radius (he made two in quick succession and couldn't do the maths)! iiipopes
No. Here's what the marks mean: "7" is the day, "Jan" is the month, "66" is the year (all when the neck was made), "A" is the 1 1/2 inch nut width, circle-14 is the QC mark http://www.bestbassg...signations.html Edited December 4, 2015 by iiipopes

BassAgent
No. Here's what the marks mean: "7" is the day, "Jan" is the month, "66" is the year (all when the neck was made), "A" is the 1 1/2 inch nut width, circle-12 is the QC mark http://www.bestbassg...signations.html
I knew about all the other marks, but the "14" is still a mystery to me. Is that QC as well?
bassbiscuits
That's interesting. I have a 1970 precision, based on its serial number, pot codes and pickup stamps. But it also has in the neck pocket a number 71 in a circle exactly like yours. I wasn't sure if that made it a 1971, but it could just as easily be a QC code. Hmm. BassAgent
That would make my bass a 1914 Fender...

EssentialTension
7 is code for jazz bass A is the neck profile (not nut width)
7 was the 1960s code for Jazz Bass but A/B/C/D are nut widths not neck profiles. V/C/U are neck profiles.
There is often confusion between the use of the letters V, C, and U used to describe neck shapes, and the use of the letters A, B, C and D in describing Fender neck widths. During the period of time from the early '60's to the early '70's, Fender used the letters A, B, C, and D to refer specifically to the width of our guitar and bass necks at the nut. These letters were stamped on the butt end of the necks, and had no reference to the shape or contour of the neck. An "A" width was 1 1/2" at the nut, "B" was 1 5/8", "C" was 1 3/4" and "D" was 1 7/8". iiipopes
I mis-typed. I should have type "circle-14" instead of "circle-12." Fixed in original post.
