Of course that is true, but the question is whether you'd be better at playing with the $600 whammy, or the $120 brand new whammy that you can get from your local store

That seems to be around the going rate for a bass whammy- they're not made any more and the bass model seems somewhat sought after. I think it has some harmony modes that aren't on the red versions.
