Tracks of my tears - Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. 50 years old and still does it for me.
Honky Tonk Woman - Stones. That cowbell / drum sound / guitar thing is just so good.

I thought the OP meant openings to albums? If so then although not popular on here i think U2s streets have no name opening the joshua tree is great.

If we are just doing songs then my fav is she sells sanctuary. Over played but still a classic riff which gets better when drums and bass kick in

Beatles - And Your Bird Can Sing. Not fussed about the song but the intro is sublime.
[/quote]one of my favourite Beatle songs, and John Peels apparently

I was surprised when we ended our set at a wedding a couple of weeks ago with Thinking Out Loud and thenopening chords really did send a shiver down my spine.

It's a good song, but I was surprised by my reaction.

The last song on the album... actually, it's not even credited and hidden after a couple of minutes of silence...

Ether Song by Turin Brakes stops me in my tracks every time and the way those first fragile chords sneak in genuinely do make the hairs stand on the back of my neck

The bagpipes and mandolin intro to Copperhead Road (Steve Earle). So much so that Mrs Japhet is getting me a mandolin for Christmas. Hope she dowsn't get me bagpipes for my birthday though.

an opening chord that does it, and probably the first time such an intro was used, though no doubt someone will be along very soon to prove me wrong, again, A Hard Days Night,

This one does it for me too. I just found an interesting link that tells the story of that chord - http://www.beatlesbible.com/features/hard-days-night-chord/

The Jam, Butterfly collector.

Good choice, it always creates a hightened sense of awareness for me when I hear the opening. They don't make B-sides like that anymore.
