Is the placement of vintage fender decal pretty random? I'm looking at a 65 precision, neck stamp looks good but the decal looks a little to close to the nut, the e in fender is under the string tree, could this be period correct? I know they were put on by hand so there is obviously some fluctuation

I thought the decal was period correct from what I can work out, I shall put a link in for the site I used for this when I get home, it was the positioning which had me wondering!
I've got a picture of the neck stamp as well which I shall put on.

"The Fender Bass - An Illustrated History" suggests it should be a block / transition logo, with either 4 or 5 (from the end of 1964) patent numbers underneath it.

There's an example on this page here...

I think you're right, dodgy decal with dodgy placement means dodgy bass!
Thanks

A moment of weakness! I'm over it now.....
Now I just need to find a sparkly purple flea bass 🙂

Looks well dodgy to me, but what do I know...

Here's the link for those who are interested. My advice- proceed with caution!

For me.... I'm even questioning if any part of it is Fender?
Again, what would I know.

looks a bit heavily smoked to me, in the headstock pic that you post - on ebay the pickguard does not look original

Id say it was a bitsa with a reliced neck

The decal looks wrong to me but the butt end looks as I would expect, I wonder if it had the decal damaged or removed in the past and someone has replaced it to try and keep the bass looking authentic.

I do think the paint in the neck cavity looks wrong, I am trying to remember but don't they tend to have an area down the left with no paint on, something to do with hanging them up for the spray process?
