James Nada Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015
Brian May?
Ahh. Yes, I think you're right. There can't be anyone else though. Animal from the Muppets? Quote
RhysP Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 A large majority of people who aren't musicians aren't even aware there is an instrument called a bass guitar, so to expect there to be bass players who are household names is just unrealistic. Quote
timmo Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015
Jack Bruce, surely. And for those of a certain age, Jet Harris.
Jack Bruce was a singer Quote

sunburstjazz1967 Posted December 12, 2015 Author Posted December 12, 2015 Did anyone read my OP? I did say that knowing what a bass guitar was or indeed that is what they played was secondary, Kim Kardashian is a household name and she does nothing at all! Quote
sunburstjazz1967 Posted December 12, 2015 Author Posted December 12, 2015
I can't think of a guitarist or drummer (who isnt a also a singer) who I think would be recognised either.
Slash Hank Marvin Keith Richards Quote
Going by your criteria I would say the only 'bass player' who is genuinely a household name would be Keanu Reeves. Do people really think that Jack Bruce, John Entwhistle or John Deacon are names that would familiar to the majority of the population? Edited December 12, 2015 by RhysP Quote
timmo Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 Perhaps the title should be household names of people who are interested and like music. Quote

HowieBass Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 When it comes to household names it's shocked me when I've seen surveys that claim that sizeable percentages of the UK population don't even know who the current Prime Minister is... so expecting that many people who are non-musicians and/or uninterested in music would know bass players by name is probably expecting way too much... EssentialTension Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 (edited) Some of the people being named I am wholly unfamiliar with. And as for Brian May, surely at best (or at worst) he would be 'the other bloke in Queen' because there is only the two of them. Edited December 12, 2015 by EssentialTension Quote

sykilz Posted December 12, 2015 Posted December 12, 2015 My generation ( I'm 45 😫) may recognise the name Mark King ( Level 42) as he did a lot of t.v back in the mid eighties, and was the one well known bass player from the era. Doubt they'd recognise him in a photo though...!! Quote
