4-string-thing
If someone showed me pictures of Jack Bruce, Flea, Chris Squire and Jaco (without their band, basses etc) I'd probably only get one of them.... Mind you, I've only been playing bass for 39 years!
colgraff
My interpretation of this is, who is the first person your average person would name when you give them a band name? This is tangential to who is the driving force in the band? So name a Beatle. About half will say Paul McCartney. Their reasons for naming him may or may not be to do with him being the bass player. But he is undoubtedly a bass player who is a household name. Edited December 13, 2015 by colgraff

chris_b
Earlier this year I had a guy come up to me on a gig and ask where the blue bass was! I haven't gigged that bass in 4 years!! So, some do know about us, but . . . . most people couldn't tell you if there was a bass part on their favourite record. Bass players who are household names? You've got to be kidding! Some of the names in this thread even I don't know.
Maude
I even googled 'Bushel bass' but came up with nothing I think a few names would recognised but maybe not the faces.

He was always whistling various Beatles tunes (very well whistled), when I asked him what his favourite Beatles tune was, he said, "Imagine, by that one that got shot". RhysP
I think this is being overthought, imagine showing a group of various people a flip book with pictures of various bass players, singing or not, mindless noodling, rocking out, whatever. Answers like "yes thats Paul McCartney from the Beatles, wings and the frog chorus" is a 100% hit, but I'll take a "ah thats the boys are back in town guy" or a "him with the tantric sex thing" as 50/50s etc, chris Squire for example, no chance really is there?
It's a bass forum, so obviously the people on here will have a vastly overinflated idea of how important/popular/well known bass players are.
