Motown - first for me, But Stax well there is some excitement on that label, like sweet and sour they balance each other nicely, music today wound not be the same without either and the cross over that followed through the 70's has shaped pop as we know it today.

I love both.

I used to think I preferred Stax because to me their productions sounded a bit rawer & edgier than Motown, but the more I've heard from both labels, the less I think that's actually true.

Both. Been playing both since 1968, although I must admit in the first version of the band in 68, when I played guitar, it would have been Stax. Loved Steve Cropper's guitar playing.
Since seeing the error of my ways and switching to Bass, I love both equally.

Both naturally.
But Motown just wins out for me because of the amazing material they produced, with so many great
varied tunes and performances over a long period. And Jamerson / Babbit 's inspirational lines of course.

Both for me also.

They're fundamentally different though - for me the Motown groove is more subtle and funkier - the stax rythmn section is great but different - and extremely powerful particularly live - the Stax horns are very edgy - more towards the James Brown style.

But they are both excellent and a bass player's dream to play.

Stax and Atlantic.

This was where the cool music was being released in the 60's and 70's.

Most of the people/players I knew at the time regarded Motown as pop music and disregarded most of it until the early 70's when What's Going On and the Music Of My Mind were released.

Stax Stax Stax, all the way.

Whilst it is true that there is breadth of material in both label's repertoire, there is a definite more earthy edge in the Stax/Volt/Atco sound.

I'd go with this.... I think Stax and Atlantic had the most kudos for quite a while after the fact... but it is still some podium.

I've got both, but Stax was ground-breaking and is the one that moves me so much.
Cropper's possibly coming back over again next Autumn B) His stories as well as his playing is/are great.
