I wonder if it has to do with military technology and the guys building them having a military background. I read somewhere that early British valve amps were built by people who'd been military trained and therefore very good at what they did.

Yes, I've actually still got some old hi-fi gear with DIN connectors but I've never come across them on instruments before.
