JTUK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEvCPvLh_60 This might be blasphemy to some but Jerry Barnes does some great things to Nile's song list.. I prefer him to Bernard Edwards as he has brought the songs and parts on... and they sit better 20-30 years later in a live context. Anyway... a double thumb take on a classic part in this video. Mykesbass
the groove is sacrificed for the fluff in that example... IMO

Yeah possibly - but this really is more towards the pop end of the soul/R and B spectrum - however it's a pretty good copy of the original (with a few fluffs), which does have that extended 16th note groove at the end - the timing and accents of the original sound a bit unusual - this was one of a number of Chic/Sister Sledge/Sheila B Devotion/Diane Ross Edwards/Rogers produced covers which I played in a touring covers band at the end of the 70s and that song certainly got people up dancing - I think the bass 16th note groove just adds to the intensity - quite clever the way it's restricted only to one bar every twelve until the end when it cuts loose. Very clever guys as writers, arrangers and musicians.
Compared to most of their work, even on the original version the bass doesn't sit quite as nicely on this particular track to my ears. ChunkyMunky
I spent about 6 months on this one. It's tricky but my goodness, it's worth it when you get to the end of it. First up, I'd recommend limbering up properly for this if you're going to do it fingerstyle. There's a few videos I can recommend you for it. In terms of playing it cleanly? Separate the whole riff into different sections. Speed said sections down and play them to perfection at a slower tempo. Why? Speed is born from precision, not the other way round. Feel free to drop me a line and I'd be happy to help.
Delberthot
I love this song. I usually use it when sound checking but then again I love octaves. Anything with octaves is good for me whether it be the simplest Roger Waters bass line or the most difficult Bernard Edwards one. I learnt to play octaves from a combination of the Dark Side of the Moon and Nathan East's instructional video back when he had a beard and hair
JTUK
I had these tracks on my record deck in my formative years and always thought everyone did... The impact that Edwards had back then where he pretty much developed a style to dominate the genre means that this octave fingerstryle funk would be hard to avoid.. A mate said he was looking forward to joining this soul unit so he could then learn all these classics and he'd been in funk type bands before so I couldn't for the life of me understand how he'd missed them ... Must be just me then...

oldbass
Good luck with the audition. Just had another listen to the intro...so clean and crisp and analogue sounding..loads of warmth. I can play most styles but can I do that chukka thing, no way, its genius. Love the second half of Dance Dance Dance where it all kinda goes quiet and he's still pumping away...like a metronome...beautiful bass work. pmjos
I'm nervous about showing this because its such an iconic line but its my effort. I think I have the basic techniques there well enough. Not trying to make excuses but obviously there are fluffs and my timing isn't properly solid again yet following a decade off bass. I'm working hard to get back. On a good day I can pull it off cleanly - this wasn't one of them as you can see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6Gufm4vx-I
