Jimryan
Afternoon all, A friend of mine seems to keep finding old basses she bought years ago and forgot about. The last one was a Westone Thunder and asked me to tidy it up and give it a set-up and she was very pleased with it. She found another yesterday and has asked if I'd give it a once over but has asked if it is worth it. Along with the text she sent me a picture of the bass and I haven't a clue what it is, apparently there's no markings hinting towards a maker, but does anyone recognise this... HowieBass
Grabbed this link from a previous thread on here about this type of bass, made by lots of different Japanese manufacturers; often badged as Silvertone when sold in the USA. http://www.matsumoku.org/models/aria/catalogs/75_aria/75_aria_catalog_pg1.jpg.html It's obviously missing the neck pickup and the upper horn scratchplate. Chienmortbb
If it is a matsumoku it is worth reviving.
NancyJohnson
Anyone here reckon that body shape looks like a Gibson EB from a couple of years back?
Jimryan
Cheers for all the help guys. My friend keeps asking whether it's worth tidying up, what do you lot reckon? Is there any way to confirm its a Matsumoku? Cheers, James Edited January 18, 2016 by Jimryan

BottomE
Hi James. Good place to have a look would be at the general state of the neck - does the Truss rod work, for example. If yes, you still have to source a pickup and do a re-wire.The A string, when using the fret dots as a guide, doesn't seem to be straight and zooming in on the picture it looks like someone has replaced the original bridge (which may explain the A String issue). My gut feeling says its probably not worth it. The thing is you never really know until you do the work and plug it in, though i'd be surprised if the outcome were worth the effort in this case. That said, this is only from looking at an image.
Bassassin
Where's Bassassin when you need him?
Off being unhelpful elsewhere! Anyroad up, It's broadly similar to one o' these: http://www.matsumoku.../a-100_200.html However - because these were sold under the Aria name it doesn't follow that it's either a Matsumoku, or even any good. Or even MIJ (although I think this one is). There were various different versions of this design seemingly from several different factories sold through the 70s & early 80s, later ones being Korean-made. If it has "Steel Adjustable Neck" on the neckplate, that would confirm it as a Matsumoku, otherwise there's no real way of IDing or dating it, apart from in the broadest terms. Still kinda cool, though... Jon.
