bubinga5
I do love this record. one of the best early MTV videos of all time. Very creative artist that he is, with a song about sex. Very innovative musician. Would love to see creativity like this more in popular music today. Cato
The 1975 did this recently which I reckon was definitely inspired by 'Sledgehammer' amongst other 80s stuff. Okay, the video is not quite in the same league.. ambient
Peter is an amazingly talented artist. I love his new blood album from a few years ago, all his songs reworked with some amazing orchestral arrangements. This is amazing - sorry it doesn't have any bass though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPT0T2FWbq8

TimR
Sounds more like Big Time. But then a lot of the Steam numbers have that distinctive guitar sound. Edited January 16, 2016 by TimR

Cato
I went to see them in brum a couple of years ago, just as they were starting to get a bit of airplay. Me and a mate fancied going to see a band & they happened to be playing that night. Didn't know any of their stuff before we went and came away really quite impressed. Delberthot
The 1975 sound a bit like Walk The Moon to me. I don't think they have much to offer other than nostalgia but then I can be very critical. I love Peter Gabriel's music. TrevorR
There's an interesting analysis of 'Sledgehammer' here http://www.ethanhein.com/wp/2013/analyzing-the-musical-structure-of-sledgehammer-by-peter-gabriel/
Terrifying level of pick-apart-iness but a great read none the less. Love this quote... "As with the drums, the bassline is so on time that it almost sounds sequenced. But no, Tony Levin is just really, really tight."
Love sledgehammer, but recently discovered this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiu6RMMNERs
Came across this vid on the telly once. Great show. IIRC the band all come on and off stage one by one in a big glass elevator in the middle of the stage, which I thought was rather cool. I can just imagine that backing vocalist's audition... "Thank you miss, you've got the job. Oh and by the way, eight songs in you'll be singing Kate Bush's lines... So, no pressure then..." Finally wonder if anyone's thought to do a thematically linked medley of Sledgehammer with this rock and roll classic...? Nah, probably not. http://youtu.be/9brPznl1Av4 (Couple of nice Madness references in that vid though...)
wateroftyne
It's a great tune - the production is very of the time, though. It's a shame we'll never get to hear Otis singing it with a crap-hot band behind him.
scalpy
There was a great classic album doc on this record. Apparently they flew Manu Katche in for the track. He sets up, they record a take, go 'that was great, Manu, now give us another one.' He goes 'Why? I've just played it!'
william64
I'm a fan of PG's music. Regarding Sledgehammer I like the awesome bass line by Tony Levin. Btw, few years ago I was lucky to meet Tony. We had a nice talk for few minutes. I gave him a bottle of good wine and I got his book Beyond the Bass Cleff signed.
Mykesbass
The 1975 sound a bit like Walk The Moon to me.
I thought the wore their influences well - little bit of Bowie's Fame, little bit of Gary Numan, as well as the large dose of Peter Gabriel. I think it must be incredibly difficult for new bands to come up with something completely new, and even if they did, it would be very unlikely to get any traction in today's highly homogenised market.
