Great track, and superb playing, but Ouch!, going to have to go and listen to that on vinyl now - the reproduction on that has got to be one of the worst Youtube uploads I've heard.

and some bloke called Dizzy on the trumpet? Not bad.
am i the only person that thinks that Dizzy is really not pushing his trumpet out there on this record. especially next to Stevies chromatic harmonica.

A defining bass line.

To a certain extent Nathan Watts was lucky that his signature licks fitted right in. Maybe his style was in Stevie Wonders mind when he wrote the song.
He wasn't lucky imo, Nathan could play any genre. Stevie was going to choose Willie Weeks, but Nathan played and he liked him.

Willie Weeks or Nathan Watts - what a choice!
Donny Hathaway was blessed. Only Pino matches him.

That would have been a completely different song if Willie Weeks was on it.

The song must have been rearranged to showcase Nathan Watts.

Bass Player magazine featured the transcription of this a few years ago as the lead article, which doesn't happen very often. The text of the article is here: http://www.bassplayer.com/artists/1171/nathan-watts-on-stevie-wonder39s-39do-i-do39/26140 - I've got the magazine somewhere but you can probably find the transcription online somewhere.

Blimey - i got this far and now understand why so many of the tunes have lots of Eb.

"Before diving into “Do I Do,” it’s highly recommended that you tune your bass down a half-step, as Nate Watts always has (since being inspired to do so after first hearing Jimi Hendrix)."

For anyone wanting to have a pop at this little ditty i found the original thread with the PDF transcription.
