kusee pee Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 As has been said, so many amazing albums to choose from. My mainstream choices would be: Duran Duran - Rio Simple Minds - New Gold Dream Both had the combination of great musicianship, quality production, top tunes and real subtlety which rewards repeated listening. My more obscure choices would be: The Ward Brothers - Madness Of It All Fiction Factory - Throw The Wharped Wheel Out Both have the same qualities as my mainstream choices but just happened to sell somewhat less. Old Man Riva Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 Impossible to name just the one, and agree with a lot that have been mentioned (Frankie, ABC, Human League, Talk Talk, Scritti Politti), but getting it down to albums by UK artists where there isn't a track I'd skip/lift the needle on I'd go with these three... A Walk Across the Rooftops - The Blue Nile Bummed - Happy Mondays New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) - Simple Minds And if it were open to all artists (i.e. not just UK) it'd be Sign o' the Times by Prince.. BassTractor Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016
UK didn't release any albums in the 80s. Their last album Danger Money was released in '79. Well someone had to say it.
What have I ever done to you that I'm in your ignore list? Oh... wait! You can't see this! Quote
TrevorR Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 How could I have forgotten So and Hounds Of Love? And The Crossing. And Misplaced Childhood. Top 10 is now a Top 14 and counting... Quote

kendall Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 For me the album that comes to mind first is The Sisters of Mercy - Floodland Followed by these in no particular order: Fields of the Nephilim - The Nephilim Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast Ozzy Osbourne - Diary of a Madman The Cult - Love Quote

I'd have gone with First and Last and Always The Nephilim, definitely! Any Maiden album of the 80s really. The first 2 Wonder Stuff albums and most of Pop Will Eat Itself's album. And just sneaking in in 1989 Godflesh - Streetcleaner. Quote

Ms Bush must surely have been one of the most inventive UK artists recording at that time. For me it's a toss-up between Hounds and The Dreaming, but I think the former possibly edges ahead for Eberhard Weber's wonderful fretless playing on Mother Stands for Comfort. Quote
Skol303 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Lots of good ones posted already Two more from me would be... Half Man Half Biscuit ‘Back in the DHSS’ Nomeansno ‘Wrong’ Quote

Chezz55 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. A great album, well produced and the marketing was almost perfect. Perhaps not the most socially or musically 'correct' album BUT it worked for me then and it still does today. I saw FGTH at the Birmingham Odeon on their first tour and despite being one of the oldest in the audience - I loved it and yes I was singing along and dancing. Chris Quote
Shaggy Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I haven't slogged though all 4 pages of this thread, but definitely Simple Minds "New Gold Dream" for me - so many superb others though Quote

sprocketflup Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Sadly Joes Garage was released just before the 80's but You Are What You Is wasn't. Frank Zappa Quote
darkandrew Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 (edited) All of those that have voted for Tears for Fears' Songs from the Big Chair might want to check out Steven Wilson's remix of the album. It's been completely rebuilt from the original analogue master tapes, all the 80s reverb fog removed and replaced with a more subtle use of modern reverb, and all the mastering compression removed and replaced by a flat transfer. It sounds amazing and you can actually hear all the different parts; Mothers Talk is an absolute revelation. Edited January 25, 2016 by darkandrew Quote
40hz Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 The Cure - Disintegration. Which also happens to be my favourite album full stop. Quote
KK Jale Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Loads of top suggestions, many of which are in my reckoning, so I won't repeat them... But just to add... Bowie's Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)... ...and Kirsty MacColl's Kite. Quote
