YouMa
Anyone know who did bass duties on the night by franki valli, this is an awesome track.
chris_b
Could have been Don Ciccone. He was the 4 Seasons bass player at the time.
YouMa
i watched a 2015 show on youtube and he was talking about how now no one apart from motown would touch him at the time,do you think it could be jamerson? i think it sounds a bit like him.Does anyone think it has the big J all over it,i just think its a killer bassline, Edited January 25, 2016 by YouMa
AndyTravis
I thought it was Bob Babbitt as it was later Motown (MoWest) I'm sure I read it somewhere. Love playing this.
Lloyd P
There was a bass player at Motown at the time called Ron Brown who used to turn up with loads of hand written riffs, grooves and licks, it's a possibility it may be him.
crez5150
I play in a prominent Northern Soul covers band.... We have had this discussion a few times.... I'm convinced its Don Ciccone. He was the main bassist over this period... but can't find hard evidence
EssentialTension
I can hear why Jamerson might be suspected but I'd bet it's Ciccone who was also a very good player.
casapete
Killer tune and bass line,
Mykesbass
Not Babbitt, at least he didn't claim it on his website list of credits - the only Frankie Valli track he did was Our Day Will Come. Hadn't Jamerson also finished working at Motown by then? According to All Music Guide, the production of the track was by The Corporation, so could have been Fonce Mizell. chris_b
The Night was recorded in the same year as December 63 (Oh What A Night), 1975, and that was Don Ciccone on bass. So as the lines, playing style and sound are pretty similar on the 2 songs I'd say that it is definitely Don Ciccone.
lowdown
Joe Long was the Bass player until the mid 70's. I would go for him, different style and sound to 'December 63'. EDIT: Just seen this, but you know Wiki...... From the Album. https://en.wikipedia...r_Seasons_album) Joe Long.
According to their "definitive" GH sleeve notes "The Night" was recorded in '72 but bombed in the US due to lack of promotion. It was re-released in the UK in '75 when it was a hit. Fantastic song; a frequent speaker tester for me. It was always a floor-filler at Wigan and still is at soul revival nights in Blackpool. BottomE
Always come back to this awesome track. It has all the ingredients of what makes a pop tune a classic plus it starts on bass!
Yes, my source agrees with 72, but is frustratingly shy about a bass player (3 guitarists though)! Which is why I suggested this Fonce Mizell, who I must admit, I hadn't heard of: http://www.allmusic.com/album/chameleon-mw0000845089
