therealting
Just put a set of Optima 24Ks on my 90s Mk I Yamaha TRB6: does that low B sound dead to anyone else? It's so muffled and lacking in sustain compared to the others in the set. https://instagram.com/p/BBBJ13HEeHS/
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
Yeah. Maybe you have to do a little truss rod adjusting
therealting
Relief is fine, there is no fret buzz. Have tried raising and lowering the action on the B string. The B string seated properly in the nut, and I've ensured proper break angle both at the nut and the saddle.
Dood
It sounds dull in comparison, yup. It can happen and no fault of the bass.
Cameronj279
Definitely does sound duller. I've had this issue a few times with different string brands. it seems to just be an issue that can happen with dodgy strings.
Kev
If you have lowered the action right down up until the point of fret buzz and it is still that dull, definitely defective and I'd return them, can't imagine they are cheap?
HazBeen
Strings are quite complex, always a chance that the core and wrap wires are not perfect...... It happens. Every 10 sets or so I encounter the same.
therealting
Optima have been in touch and are collecting the old string (for checking) in exchange for a brand new one. Fair play, that's good customer service.

Better would have been sending a string without asking for the original back, that is the experience I have had with other string manufactures before (Elixir). therealting
I don't think it's to check on me - probably more so they can see what the issue is and where the defect may be so they can look at their processes.

[/quote] I had this issue recently with the B string on a pack of Elixirs and they sent me out a full new set of strings and asked to send them the dodgy string back in an envelope they were sending me. I didn't get the envelope (meaning I had no address to send to) so e-mailed asking for the address and they just asked me to send a picture of the string... ? Great customer service. Got a few picks with the strings as well. Handy to have even though I never use them. Edited January 27, 2016 by Cameronj279

Guest gazzatriumph
I had a dud E string, D'addario sent me a new set out which arrived the next day and didnt ask for the E string to be returned, excellent customer service and I will be staying with them for sure. therealting
I would wager that D'Addario make many times more strings than Optima and so have less incentive to improve their processes through examination of defective strings. JTUK
As a B I wouldn't say that is bad...but it suffers by comparison. IMO.
