Music where bass guitars aren't used

Recently I've been going through a Synthwave bent, mainly because it reminds me of old 80s scifi movies.

I've recently got into synthwave. Mitch murder etc. Love it for same reason but it is also really musical. I like the scandanavian penchant for harmonic and melodic minor. To be fair love them synth bass sounds

Much of the stuff I listen to doesn't have a bass guitar, though much still has a bass line on some sort of instrument.
Come to think of it, very little of what I listen to it has a bassline played on bass guitar.

Dutch 80s band Mo used bassoon, synth or electric piano for the bass role, depending on song or song segment.
Here's their "Nancy" in playback with visible bassoon (not in bass role though).

I listen to loads of classical music, and experimental ambient type stuff.

Wot..? There's stuff that doesn't use [i]bass[/i]..?

No, seriously; it's not a criteria at all in my listening. Any and everything, from solo a capela singing, through nose flutes to chamber music, passing by Oriental ragas and other ethnic to jazz ensembles, fusion, classical and classic rock, some of which contains [s]nuts[/s] bass. Some of it is quite nice, too.

That said, with enough effects, basically any genre can be done well on bass.

The last tune my band recorded I sequenced most of the bass, so there isn't even all that much bass guitar in my own music!

I played in a band like that once... no, seriously!

[spoiler]Keys, guitar, pansx2 and Sousaphone IIRC. Thirty years ago though so no clue what we sounded like, but I do recall that the Sousaphone didn't sound anywhere near as bad as you'd think it should. [/spoiler]

If you mean bass of the stringed variety then yeah, shedloads. I'm into plenty of electronic music that features no stringed instruments whatsoever.

But then there are huge swathes of electronic music where bass features predominantly (much more so than in guitar-based genres), sometimes as the 'lead' instrument.

Reminds me of when I first saw LFO at the Sheffield Octagon, early 90s. They played their signature track at the time, "LFO", and I remember watching some of the bottles behind the bar come loose and smash on the floor. Now [i]that[/i] was bass it quite literally shook the room.

Here's the track for anyone interested. Sounds dated now, but the subs are still as ferocious as ever - although you'll need some hefty speakers to hear them...
