keefbaker Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 So, anybody into stuff that doesn't use bass? Recently I've been going through a Synthwave bent, mainly because it reminds me of old 80s scifi movies. Quote

Mitch murder etc. Love it for same reason but it is also really musical. I like the scandanavian penchant for harmonic and melodic minor. To be fair love them synth bass sounds Quote
RhysP Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 (edited) Pretty much everything I listen to these days has no bass, or drums for that matter. Edited February 5, 2016 by RhysP Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Ambient stuff . Tangerine dream/ pete namlook/ jarre etc. Quote
xgsjx Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Much of the stuff I listen to doesn't have a bass guitar, though much still has a bass line on some sort of instrument. Come to think of it, very little of what I listen to it has a bassline played on bass guitar. Quote
tonyquipment Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 drum n bass Trance Ambient Anything electronic really Quote
4stringslow Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Bach concertos are a favourite, particularly the Brandenburg ones. Quote
BassTractor Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Dutch 80s band Mo used bassoon, synth or electric piano for the bass role, depending on song or song segment. Here's their "Nancy" in playback with visible bassoon (not in bass role though). I lurv it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntwRQ9JzN0A Quote

ambient Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I barely listen to stuff that does have. I listen to loads of classical music, and experimental ambient type stuff. Quote

There's stuff that doesn't use bass..? No, seriously; it's not a criteria at all in my listening. Any and everything, from solo a capela singing, through nose flutes to chamber music, passing by Oriental ragas and other ethnic to jazz ensembles, fusion, classical and classic rock, some of which contains [s]nuts[/s] bass. Some of it is quite nice, too. Quote
elephantgrey Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I like me a bit of chiptune. That said, with enough effects, basically any genre can be done well on bass. Quote
bonzodog Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 With more and more people listening to music through tablets and phones with crappy speakers, songs with bass in is none existent anyway Quote
alyctes Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I love this to bits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmQMNEsKdTU Quote
AustinArto Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 The last tune my band recorded I sequenced most of the bass, so there isn't even all that much bass guitar in my own music! Quote
Rich Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Bellowhead -- their bass instrument is a sousaphone. Quote
AustinArto Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 It's a Helicon isn't it? Their drummer is brilliant. Quote
I played in a band like that once... no, seriously!
Keys, guitar, pansx2 and Sousaphone IIRC. Thirty years ago though so no clue what we sounded like, but I do recall that the Sousaphone didn't sound anywhere near as bad as you'd think it should.
Quote

Skol303 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 (edited) If you mean bass of the stringed variety then yeah, shedloads. I'm into plenty of electronic music that features no stringed instruments whatsoever. But then there are huge swathes of electronic music where bass features predominantly (much more so than in guitar-based genres), sometimes as the 'lead' instrument. Reminds me of when I first saw LFO at the Sheffield Octagon, early 90s. They played their signature track at the time, "LFO", and I remember watching some of the bottles behind the bar come loose and smash on the floor. Now that was bass it quite literally shook the room. Here's the track for anyone interested. Sounds dated now, but the subs are still as ferocious as ever - although you'll need some hefty speakers to hear them...
