Supposedly Alice met these characters while he was drying out in a clinic which sounds a little far fetched. I like the album and the songs follow a common theme with a gatefold sleeve on the lp. Their later stuff was so drab I never noticed if the bass sounded any good. Strangely enough I'm quite enjoying the new album with the new singer ( sorry Mr Tate!!), much more in their earlier style, though I suspect a less kind fan would scream " rip off"... I've seen it referred to as a "Folk Opera" and is a reworking of the Greek myth of Orpheus & Eurydice, setting it in a sort of Depression era USA environment. Superb album. The story is all there but the tracks are jumbled up. If you wanted to hear the story you have to reorder the album. I have done it, but it took some fiddling programming the CD player.
