Pow_22
My current covers band does Chelsea Dagger by Fratellis and I’m looking for something that will give me a trebly, clanky and slightly dirty sound but enough bass not to drop out of the song – something sounding like what id imagine a Rickenbacker through a valve amp would sound like. Ive tried a Big Muff and also a Boss Bluesdriver, whilst the Boss gets close its still a bit too fuzzy. My rig probably doesn’t help too much – P Bass with Flats > Tech 21 VT > Ampeg 350h > Ampeg 410he. I get that the flats probably wont help but I do believe that the bass player from fratellis also uses flats on a P albeit through an SVT valve amp that probably helps. Is there any pedal that would get me close to this type of sound without costing the earth?
uncle psychosis
There will be other suggestions but check out the EHX Bass Soul Food.
EliasMooseblaster
How's your EQ looking? If you're not already cutting the bass and opening up the treble a bit, that might be worth a try!
dudewheresmybass
I've had good results using: Bass soul food Ibanez bass tube screamer Hardwire cm2
Japhet
I use a Way Huge Green Rhino on that song. Sounds alright to me.
rmorris
Sounds like making it hard for yourself with the flats. Change to rounds or a substitute bass for this track ?
Lozz196
I can`t imagine not being able to get that sound with a Precision and a VT Bass - though rounds on said Precision would help. I`d just adjust the eq on the VT til you get what you need by trial and error. I don`t think any other pedals are needed.
charic
Yeah, it'll be the strings I'm afraid! Also, try a pick
gary mac
I've played this on a few deps and got the sound pretty much spot on. No pedals, just one of my Fenders or G&L's. Always with rounds and a pick.
Muzz
Yep, we do this now and again - I don't use a precision, but a split coil in the right place, some EQ and clattering it with a pick can do it - the VTBass should be even better. dannybuoy
The VT is perfect for this. Bass Soul Food will do as well, but not as good a job as what you already have I reckon! Time for roundwound strings, bring 2 basses if you must have flats for other tunes!
ratman
I play a P with flats. I have a Bass Soul Food which gives me that dirty clank. I've also tried a B3K which did it brilliantly too. As said above though, the VT you own should be able to do this for you.
rmorris
I sort of assumed the OP would be using a plectrum (or finger nails )...???

Beedster
OP wants trebley/clanky and not one reply has suggested "get a Ric". What's wrong with this place these days
IBWT
Crank up the treble and character on your VT.

dannybuoy
B3K vote from me. That blend control is ace.
For a punky Precision tone though, I have to say the Vulcan (with the colour set to the old school position) beats the B3K. It's as if the midrange was tuned to pair with an angry P and sounds a bit like a Darkglass Vintage but with hairier balls.
BigBassBob
You could try lowering the action a touch and playing more aggressively. The VT you have should be able to get you there. As others have said, I think rounds would make getting that clanky P sound a lot easier.
