Dan Dare Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Finally finished the project bass. Squier P body, Warmoth neck, Bill Lawrence p/u I bought in the 1980s and never got around to using, Gotoh bridge. Looks and sounds good. Was about to order the inevitable Fender decal for the headstock when a little voice told me not to be so sad. So looking for ideas. Hotpoint appeals (you can get their decals). Any other suggestions? Quote
Hobbayne Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 How about something like this? Doctor J Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Have the strength of character not to be a brand slave. Basses look fine without logos, [Img]https://docjgear.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/king_1.jpg" class="ipsImage" /> Quote
wateroftyne Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 They look unfinished IMO. It needs something on there... Quote
fretmeister Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 http://rs276.pbsrc.com/albums/kk28/francofreduk/RIMG0025.jpg~c200 That would do Quote
TrevorR Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Since you're going to proudly tell everyone that you did the bass yourself as a project rather than try to pass it off as a genuine .fender a logo saying something like "Dan Dare Custom" with maybe a little clip art retro style rocket would fit the bill nicely. I agree that without a decal it looks a bit empty and unfinished but with a fake branded logo it looks a bit sad... Does that neck still have the Squier logo as leaving that could be an option. Quote
LayDownThaFunk Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I get asked more about my bass because it has nothing on the headstock. Pretty sure that's more than someone with a battered old Fender who starts whittling on about when it was made in 1942... Quote
rushbo Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I'm one of those people who think a Bass needs something on the headstock (even though it doesn't, really.) The decals are really easy to do yourself- the paper is available on Fleabay for not very much. On my bitsa basses, I've gone for the not very original "Fedner" brand...I have a Jazzy bass, a Prescription bass and a Protruberant bass. Some basic desk top publishing skills and a squirt of lacquer and voila! But the Dan Dare idea sounds way better...a nice image of a retro rocket and some suitable lettering would be a great addition to the ol' peg head... Quote
Rich Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I reckon 'Rushbo' would have looked cool in the Fender script. Rushbo Prescription Bass. Make it so! Quote
Dan Dare Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 Thanks for that link Hobbayne. I can find an electrical appliance logo I like the look of and get them to make me one. Doctor J - it's precisely because I don't want to be a brand slave that I want something daft. Quote
rushbo Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016
I reckon 'Rushbo' would have looked cool in the Fender script. Rushbo Prescription Bass. Make it so!
Being a vain and arrogant chap, I did try it and it didn't look quite right...I did make a "Rushbo Custom Shop" decal for the reverse of the headstock tho. Quote
Twigman Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I have a couple of Warmoth necks on basses I put together myself....they remain without decals. I have a little problem insofar that if I was to use my own name as a 'brand', it would have to say 'Gibson'....DOH! Quote
Raggy Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 These guys are really good and very helpful. http://www.rothkoandfrost.com/custom-waterslide-decals-uk-for-guitars-bikes/ Quote

Make it a Dyson logo and then you can make "suction" remarks about yourself and others - or go for Head and shoulders (only funny if you've bald or balding and have a sense of humor about it!). Quote
TrevorR Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016
It's not a Squier neck.
D'oh! Quote

SICbass Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 (edited) The best example I've seen lately was on a bitsa precision made by Mykesbass of BC fame. I hope he doesn't mind me copy-/robbing his graphic. BTW, if you should read this Mykesbass, I am gutted that you've withdrawn this bass. If I lived in the UK, I would have definitely come by to try it out. Edited February 11, 2016 by SICbass Quote
Dan Dare Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 Thanks Raggy Will check them out. Quote

rushbo Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Here's my motley collection of Bitsa's... Mainly mistreated Squiers and one heavily modified Aria. I love 'em all. You can't beat a Mongrel Bass! Quote

nige1968 Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 Long ago when I cared not a jot for brands and basses, I stuck a Happy Shopper logo on my fretless Yamaha BB1100S. Cut off food packaging, I think. I still think it's a good look. Shame I no longer have the bass. Quote
