Dr.Dave Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 The bridge looks gone , it has mods , and the crack you've noticed which would certainly be a worry to buy unseen. So - it's not an 'original' , and never could be because of the Jazz routing. It's not likely to be a great player without new bridge and that body sorting out (unless it is just paint). It is interesting though - and I was/am a big fan of John McCoy. Wouldn't have a clue how to price this one. If it stays mid hundreds I might be tempted. Own a vintage celebs bass and swallow the problems etc. Doubt it will though. Quote

TBH, it's the most interesting sh*te old Fender I've seen for ages. I do have a certain affection for sh*te old Fenders but I do think they're vastly overrated. If I had £250 to spare, and space for another bass, I'd consider putting a bid in for it. Quote
warwickhunt Posted September 28, 2008 Author Posted September 28, 2008 I noted that the buyer has been asked plenty questions but not one seems to be about the crack I decided to email and ask about it and to be fair to the seller, he has responded 'directly to me' but funnily enough hasn't listed my question and his response on the listing. If anyone is concerned about the crack then here is his response below and he has said there are pics available. Hi, Thanks for the message. It is a difficult one to judge without actually breaking away the finish. The finish is very thick. I have gently probed it with a pin, and it doesn't feel as if it goes in any further that the finish, but the general cracking of the finish is likely due to wood shrinkage, so if there is a crack in the wood it may not be as open as it is in the finish. With the neck and scratchplate removed, the crack in the finish runs around the neck joint and almost down to the pickup recess. If you send me an email address I can send you some pictures. Sorry for the waffly answer, but I cant really give a definite yes or no. Quote

Why are basses different ? makes no sense to me either. Quote

bassmanady Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 It baffles me the price it has reached so far,considering the state it is in...but its a vintage Fender with history, so what do i know...i thought the crack maybe the glue joint giving up caused by the wood drying out,perhaps it has had excessive temperature changes with heat and moisture,sun/central heating etc..look how rusty the bridge is methinks Quote

Looking at the history I'd be surprised if it hasn't spent more than it's fair share of time in the back of a transit van day and night It's certainly been a working 'tool' and as such may well not have had the TLC that some people lavish on their pride and joy... that's not a criticism, just an observation. Still £2k+ is a lot of money for a potentially wrecked bass! Quote

Plus all the bids look a little too much in a progression !!! If you look at bids on other high value basses earlier bids beat later bids and the dates are pretty mixed up. Not that I am insinuating anything is out of the ordinary its just I think private auctions are dodgy full stop. Unless its porn movies or marital aids......then they have a place, oh er mrs.....
