Oh yes, I respect and admire West's ability to speak his words quickly in a regular staccato manner; I've been known to do the same myself on many an occasion. But if he was to say "I'm better than McCartney" or "I write better "songs" than Lennon", I should say,
"OI!! West!! NOOOOOOO!!!!
You're entitled to talk crap in the land of the free,
But it'll upset up Blue,
And put Hiram off his tea
It's been done before
By that MC Hammer,
So get off my lawn and stay outta my manor!

Excellent :) I do hope Blue gets the joke. Edited by 4stringslow

Just now returned home from few days in Liverpool having done nothing Beatles related. Mind you I have been to Liverpool about 25 times before.

Only Beatles related incident was when I asked son and his mates while in Grapes pub was it the Grapes pub associated with Beatles? No, that would be the one in Matthew Street but the gin selection is not as good.

The only time I've been to Liverpool I didn't really take in anything Beatles related either. My old band played at the Pilgrim and stayed over at a friend's house. In the morning we found a good secondhand record shop, had a fried breakfast somewhere and bought a massive bag of ripe bananas that we couldn't finish. I also recall spending some time giggling at the name of Menlove Avenue when we passed it, completely unaware of the Beatle significance of the address.

This is on a par with Mrs DrT and I's visit to Stratford on Avon last year - we did absolutely nothing related to Shakespeare, theatre etc - the Beatles are to Liverpool as Shakespeare is to Stratford as the Black Country Museum is to Dudley.

As for the Beatles and their relevance, I was at infant school when Can't Buy Me Love was in the charts - at playtime, Beatles bubble gum cards became legal tender - my friends and I could sing all of the Beatles hits of the time (including the twangy guitar solos) - the only other group I recall having this accolade was the Swinging Blue Jeans.

Other bands of that time which were completely off the radar included the Shadows - something from a previous era which my parents and my friend's parents liked so were about as uncool as Perry Como and others as far as we were concerned. Even Gerry and the Pacemakers paled when they did Ferry Across the Mersey at the time!!

I would class myself as someone who grew up with the Beatles and therefore they have a big relevance musically for me - I suspect the same for many of my generation and those a little older.

I've only ever been to Liverpool once in my life and that was to Anfield, somewhere else which is synonymous with Liverpool!!

Random observation: Here's the UK chart the first time the Beatles appeared in it.

'Love Me Do' must have sounded like something from outer space.

As for their early songs being 'boy loves girl' - absolutely right. But as someone who was there when it all happened pointed out to me - the knowing swagger in the first line of 'Saw Her Standing There' was new, and also marked a culture shift.

'Well she was just seventeen / You know what I mean...?'

I wasn't around when it happened, but I can totally see Blue's POV.

That's not an endorsement of your approach, BTW :-)

Maray is bloody lovely. There's a bunch of great food places sprung up on and around Bold St the last few years. Rookwood round the corner does a great burger. If you're up again and venture further afield to the "Baltic Triangle" area, a drumming mate of mine is the chef at The Baltic Social and cooks some stunning food.

Glad you guys had a good trip!

Come to Halesowen, where everyone knows someone who knows someone whose dad used to go to school with Robert Plant. Or Glenn Tipton.

I've met at least a dozen pensioners who all "used to live next door to Noddy Holder's Mum" - and she didn't even live in a tower block!!

Agreed on Maray. One of the guys running it is son of old friend of Mrs ET.

And I vaguely know Bold St anyway due to Mrs ET lived next to bombed out church when a student at Liverpool 30 years ago.

Son of ET is student there and lives in Kensington and has girlfriend living in the Baltic Triangle.

We also have friends living in Hoylake.

Liverpool is a popular place with us. One of son's friends is planning to move to Liverpool just because he liked it so much.

Son of ET texted me late one night (from Liverpool) saying ' I just met Noddy Holder's son'.

Very possible; Django is at Liverpool Uni & plays in a band too. He has very proud parents, his Mum told me all about it when we met up over the drawing I did.

Another night the text was ' I am in same bar as Noddy Holder but too nervous to say hello'. Seems like proud parents visiting, as myself and Mrs ET did last week.
