spectoremg
Looking to fill up some empty space when the guitard drops out of the riff to solo in a three-piece. Many thanks.
Woodinblack
I use a fishman powerchord FX for that. It is ok. I had an Akai Unibass before that. Less flexible, but I think overall it was a better sound.
0175westwood29
i use a ehx pitchfork for doing this, on a gainy sound it works well, can get a bit royal blood. Andy
AustinArto
For fat and dirty the MXR Sub Machine looks a bit special.
NoirBass
I've been using a Micro POG, sending the dry signal to my amp and then the octave up to a Zoom G1on. Maximum flexibility, loads of options for guitar-esque tones. There's even an organ sim in the Zoom that gives you some cool textures too. I also put a tuner in each of the two signal paths then I can mute either my bass signal or the POG oct up.
Cosmo Valdemar
I used an EHX Micro POG on a recording a while back. Nicely convincing 8-string sound, certainly close enough for live use. I've been after one ever since but they are a bit pricey as I would only use it on a couple of songs...
Sibob
I've got a Nano POG which is great for this, and whilst I'm happy with that, I've just got a Line6 M5, and the pitch glide on that thing is amazing. Up and down pitches sound fantastic. Si
mSz
How about Digitech Bass Whammy? You get octave up and much more than any other pedal mentioned above can deliver.

LewisK1975
Micro POG - great octave up and can be routed separately too if you need it to be...
tauzero
I use a Zoom MS-60B with the BassPitch effect (I think) which gives a pretty effective octave up, slightly dirty, useful for things like "Riverboat song" and "I love rock and roll". GarethFlatlands
Line 6 M5 seconded, very cheap these days as well. Ampeg Octave Scrambler does octave up with an optional fuzz blend too. Gutted I can't seem to find the BYOC version I made at the minute for some reason.
AustinArto
Yeah the Whammy effect in the Line 6 M series pedals is the cleanest Whammy I've ever heard and it works brilliantly on bass. Really can't sing its praises enough and a +1 Oct Whammy effect is something I use literally all the time, have done for years.
Alien
I had an Akai Unibass before that. Less flexible, but I think overall it was a better sound.
I'd go along with that. Does the octave above plus either the 5th above that (for an octave up powerchord effect) or the 4th below, for root, 5 & 8. Sounds good to my ears. Lets you send the octave signal out to a separate amp too. A Edited March 5, 2016 by Alien
azfatboy
How about Digitech Bass Whammy? The main trade-off is the size, but if you use the other features, it might be worth it. Edited April 27, 2017 by azfatboy
Sibob
The Bass Whammy does sound good, although unless you particularly need all the harmony and whammy ability, then it is a massive footprint for a simply octave up. The Line6 M range octave sound (pitch glide) is excellent, would fully agree with that, and yeah, an M5 can be found pretty cheap used. But again, if you literally just want it for an octave up sound, it's a big footprint. Si
indiegrungesound
I couldn't get the Rowin Octopus to get a good sound for me. Just bought a Nano POG, which I think is brilliant!
dmccombe7
+1 for the Fishman. I was very impressed by this pedal when i heard it on youtube. Dave
krispn
FEA Labs Photon Fuzz has an up octave that can be blended in on top of driven/Fuzz tone. It might not be the sound you're looking for but it's an option on top of the massive tones the PF can achieve There may be one for sale in the effects section 😉
dudewheresmybass
I've just picked up an eno octave on eBay for £19 delivered. It does 1&2 octaves down as well as one octave up. Tracks well down to fret 4 on the e string, and sounds pretty damn good. I'll be trying it out in anger tomorrow
